It's always a drag to be a man out of time. Never more so than if you are a pissed-off neo-hippie from a broken home, crafting some of the most charmingly ramshackle psychedelia ever recorded in the era of Green Day.
Thank God For Mental Illness: Brian Jonestown Massacre @ Emo's
Hots On #9: Jonestown's Underground
There are a variety of reasons why last month’s release of My Bloody Underground, the thirteenth album by the Brian Jonestown Massacre, wasn’t met with the reams of bated-breath publicity reserved for Portishead, another culty 90s rock band that’s been MIA for awhile. Most of them have to do with the kind of publicity the band has attracted elsewhere in its career: Anton Newcombe, the creative force behind the Massacre, is at least as notorious for his legendary onstage meltdowns, including a gig at the Viper Room in LA that was supposed to have resulted in a six-figure major label deal, as he is for his warped, postmodern take on '60s pop and psychedelia.
It's a Winter Dance Party at The Mohawk!
Saturday night the wonderful folks at Mohawk are throwing a Winter Dance Party. Now hold on minute o jaded one, this isn't your wastoid scenester roommate's type of dance party. No DJs in funny hats. No Madonna/Bloc Party mash-ups, no ironic 80s, and probably no bump 'n' grind. This is a 100% pure rock dance party, and you can bet your Beatle boots that you will be moved along with the rest of the crowd. Don't get us wrong, Austinists love us some scened out dance madness, but Jesus, how many times can we be expected to piss our pants when DJ iTunes decides to play Journey? In the spirit of dance diversity, this show is a much-needed change of pace.
Austinist Giveaway: Brothers & Sisters at Emo's Tonight
In less than a year, Austin's Brothers and Sisters have established themselves as true thoroughbreds among the new stable of American indie/country bands. Their show tonight at Emo's marks the kick off of a national tour with fellow Texas luminaries Trail Of Dead and post-hardcore champs The Blood Brothers. Described by some as a "soft, warm family quilt," Bros & Sis' music is a patchwork of musical genres spanning the hard, bluesy psych-rock of...
Austinist Preview & Giveaway: The Purrs at Trophy's
With a one-word moniker like Jima (Jim A., a self-imposed nickname taking his first name and last initial), you kind of have to bring it, right? So front-man/bassist for Seattle’s The Purrs does what he can—he’s known for his rhetorical swagger, spouting off cocky quips inspired by the bottle. Enter comparisons to Brian Jonestown Massacre and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Local Music is Sexy Band Profile: The Black Angels
[In which we use the word fuck no less than three times. Well, four.] A few months ago, at a house party in Hyde Park thrown by local label Christmas Mountain Records, we found ourselves lounging idly with our mates on a plushly upholstered sofa, near the stage setup of a living room so sardine-packed with Austin hipsters that, in the dimmed lighting and from our low vantage point, all one could make out...
“DiG!” It
“DiG!”is probably the best documentary about a band that we have seen in the past year. Writer/director Ondi Timoner brings to light the friendship cum bitter rivalry between Anton Newcombe and Courtney Taylor and their respective bands, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols. Both musicians fancy themselves revolutionaries in the music world, but the paths they take to achieve their success drastically diverge, leaving their friendship torn and their lives and careers in very different places. Come to a special screening sponsored by Scion on Thursday night at the Alamo Drafthouse South. This is a very limited engagement, so RSVP’s are required and can be done here. As a very special bonus, Timoner will be on hand for Q&A after the screening. We recommend checking out this film whether you are a fan of either band or do not know the first thing about either one. The tragicomedy of these people’s lives is not to be missed. (We’re looking at you, Joel Gion, you silly lovable bastard.)
