When festivalgoers look back on the Friday of ACL Fest 2009, we suspect they'll remember it less for the performances than for the fact that this was undoubtedly the most pleasant day to attend the festival in recent memory. The crowds flowed in steadily through the day, making the park easy to navigate until around 5 or 6 pm. Food lines were fairly sedate until the dinner hour, when (as always) they got a little crazy. The new lawn at Zilker was beautiful and wasn't kicking up a speck of dust, making the air notably easier to breathe. And the weather! The breezy, low-80's temperatures had everyone in an amiable mood for the day of performances, which made it easier to accept that original headliners Beastie Boys weren't on the bill due to a saddening cancer scare.

Somehow, nestled among the antlers and fur and teeth of indie rock, like Max in his wolf suit, the new feels primal, and the young feel wise. But enough speculation…one thing is for sure, tonight’s lineup is a wild romp. The woozy, warm impressionist tones of Wye Oak will give way to the raucous processional through craggy terrain that is Blitzen Trapper. This is a band that could have sprung fully formed from the pages of a German Romantic novella- their sensibility is textbook witching hour. And like Halloween, it’s a hell of a lot of fun. Check out "Woof & Warp of the Quiet Giant's Hem" off their 2007 bohemian primer “Wild Mountain Nation,” for example.

Austin label End Sounds has put together a big party to kick off SX music. On Tuesday, 3/17, Red 7 will host Madball, Death In The Park, Reign Supreme, Mike Herrera's Tumbledown, Call To Preserve, True Widow, Bitter End, The Escape Frame, and an ad hoc Minor Threat cover band featuring Zach Blair, Luke Abbey, Frank Carter, and Sam Ghanbar. The show is open to the public and cover is $10.

In the sensory overload of SXSW, bands can find it awfully tough to make a lasting impression. But in March, when the inevitable "who have you liked so far?" questions happened at parties and in beer lines, Blitzen Trapper were often the band that had everyone talking. The Portland-based sextet traffic in brilliantly revamped classic rock sounds that might shame Kings Of Leon into permanent hiding. You'll hear shades of Dylan, Neil Young, Big Star, and even Pavement in Blitzen Trapper's music. The charm here is that the group is shambolic and rough-hewn at times, but have the tunes to back up the noise.

On Saturday, October 13, Two Gallants and Blitzen Trapper played at the Mohawk downtown. The Gallants were celebrating the one-year anniversary of their epic taser catastrophe in Houston, and Blitzen Trapper were supporting their latest record, Wild Mountain Nation....

Before “Don’t tase me, bro!” entered our national parlance, Saddle Creek signees Two Gallants had their own run-in with an overzealous, taser-happy police officer and his lack of discretion. It took place in Houston, no less, yet another reason for bands to avoid any part of Texas east of Austin - not that they really needed one. After the dust settled, Two Gallants continue to tour un-tasered, and will be spending the one year...

Pseudosix Pseudosix (Sonic Boom) Pseudosix began as Tim Perry's solo project, but quickly became a group effort with Emil Amos (Grails, Dolorean), Joe Kelly, and a handful of other local, talented friends. The band has written and recorded with pals from Joggers, Decemberists and The Standard in their relatively short existence, but the impetus has been barreling towards this release since back in the day when Perry wrestled with the nerve to perform live,...

Chicago based David Vandervelde plays Emo’s this evening in support of his debut full-length The Moonstation House Band, out now on Secretly Canadian. The album highlights Vandervelde’s versatility and multi-instrumental panache. His ability to tint pop songs with an orchestral emphasis, psychedelic strains, and worldly sounds results in an intriguing and enjoyable product. Vandervelde’s vocals bleed sincerity and the live show tonight should combine all his potential into one powerful performance. Blitzen Trapper from Portland support with alt-country pop while local duo Mike Booher and Catherine Davis (of Zykos) kick things off at 10 p.m. Join us!

Blitzen Trapper Wild Mountain Nation (Lidkercow Ltd.) Folksy but freakish Portlanders Blitzen Trapper have yet to be scooped up by Zach Braff, but that's probably only because they're still on the fringes of too weird. Yet, between soothing and familiar odes to old Grateful Dead tunes and powerful plays towards anti-genre adorableness, the odd sextet manage to capture the listener's attention while totally defying their own. Eccentric, playful and genuine songs fuse 70's goofball...

*The views expressed in The Laurie Show are those of the author and do not represent Austinist as a whole.* -ed. note Oh, the confusion I must be causing! Sort of. Yours truly, hostess of The Laurie Show, which frightens the locals on late night Fridays, has been an on-again off-again presence. My apologies for the irregular schedule. The Hold Steady have been holding, er, steady in the limelight since 2004, picking up a Village Voice cover here and a best album of the year there (2006: The Onion’s A.V. Club), and just generally best-ing all over the place: they were Blender’s 2006 Band of the Year and made it to Rolling Stone’s annual album ranker at number 8. Critical acclaim blah blah blah. The big hit from the big album Boys...

Heading to End of an Ear or Waterloo? Here's what you can look for this week on the new release wall. Adem: Love & Other Planets (Domino) Adem's work with Fridge doesn't give any indication of his capabilities as a folk / pop singer-songwriter, but the distinction between the styles is indicative of his talent. The album's subtle yet sonic layers combined with Adem's fragile, persistant voice create a soundscape to match the themes...
