Black Rebel Motorcycle Club brings its leather jacket strut and guitar-rock grit to Antone’s tonight. The California act’s first two records, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Take Them On Your Own, conjured up anthemic rock with its fair share of noisy feedback and shoegazing tendencies, resulting in instant classics like “Love Burns”, “Whatever Happened To My Rock 'N' Roll (punk song)”, and “Stop.” The three-piece then changed its tune a bit, shifting course with album number three, Howl (released in 2005), which was a primarily acoustic, extremely bluesy, sometimes country flavored record that had loyal fans a tad mystified. However, Howl did not disappoint in terms of quality and was followed by 2007’s Baby 81, which harnessed the swagger and stomp of their earlier work while also harboring the roots of Howl. Even though the in-your-face immediacy and unavoidable panache of the first two albums seemed a bit toned down (for better or for worse), there was little doubting the band’s ability to churn out memorable hooks and catchy melodies. Crunching blues ditties (“Took Out A Loan”), chant-along chorus’ (“Weapon Of Choice”), lengthy jams (“American X”), and radio-friendly fare (“Cold Wind” and “All You Do Is Talk”) kept Baby 81 enjoyable if not fresh, engaging if not ground-breaking....

Darkness can descend like a sheet of fear-inducing nothingness, or it can be a dense, complicated, and utterly tangible shroud. When the lights went down on the house music before Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's set at La Zona on Friday night, the curtain of blackness was like a wall of anticipation crashing down. As Peter Hayes, Robert Levon Been and Nick Jago took the stage to screams and applause, the kerosene stage fog seemed......

If you were planning on sitting at home tonight knitting and listening to Lawrence Welk or something, we highly recommend you redirect your energies towards one of the fine rock 'n' roll shows that's going to be gracing our city tonight. Maybe Black Rebel Motorcycle Club would be up your alley? Call it garage rock, call it blues revival, but regardless, the sound is all guitars, all the time, acoustic and electric jangling along......

Jason Quever combines anecdotal songwriting with lush folk-pop in Papercuts’ Can’t Go Back, out soon on Gnomonsong. The San Francisco based musician finds a unique balance between malaise and vigor on his new release. Moody narratives are married with layered orchestrations to conjure a somewhat manic depressive feel. The album opener, “Dear Employee” ends with resigned refrains of “I don’t need you no more” while the possibly tongue-in-cheek “Unavailable” repeats “He’s stepping out for a......

With a one-word moniker like Jima (Jim A., a self-imposed nickname taking his first name and last initial), you kind of have to bring it, right? So front-man/bassist for Seattle’s The Purrs does what he can—he’s known for his rhetorical swagger, spouting off cocky quips inspired by the bottle. Enter comparisons to Brian Jonestown Massacre and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. But musically, The Purrs prove more than cock-rockers, giving us a history lesson in......
