On Prank Calls, Oversharing, and the Chaos of SXSW: An Interview with Tobacco from Black Moth Super Rainbow

For over a decade now, Tom Fec - better know by his performing alias, Tobacco - has been crafting his own peculiarly warped brand of electronic folk-pop, either on his own solo releases or with his main band, Black Moth Super Rainbow. Tobacco and his BMSR bandmates - The Seven Fields of Aphelion, Father Hummingbird, Ryan Graveface, and Iffernaut - have kept themselves something of an enigma, which suits the day-dreamy quality of their music. Tobacco sings though a vocoder, giving the vocals a tired, decayed sensibility that brings to mind great quantities of time spent in a basement. Combined with a sun-spangled psychedelia of their exclusively analog electronic instrumentation, BMSR's music simultaneously conjures the isolated woodlands outside their native Pittsburgh as well as stacks and stacks of time-warped home movies. more ›

SXSW News & Rumor Updates: 135 Bands And Counting

Because we're all hoping they'll finally find their audience (aside from our moms) and land a record deal, The Black Crowes have announced their 2008 tour, which includes a stop at SXSW 2008. They will headline at Stubb's, no less. Keep your fingers crossed for them, folks. In other news, we've received word on a handful of local bands that have been accepted by SXSW, including (but not limited to) The Lemurs, Peel, Weird Weeds, Car Stereo (Wars) and almost local rapper Bun B of UGK (Houston).
