Preview: The Black Heart Procession at the Mohawk [Tonight]

It’s been a few years since we’ve heard from them, but San Diego’s Black Heart Procession is back with a new album Six —their first numerically titled album since their 2000 effort Three—and a tour that brings them through town with a show at the Mohawk tonight. It’s an interesting time for the band, as singer/guitarist Pall Jenkins and keyboardist Tobias Nathaniel recently reformed their indie rock combo Three Mile Pilot, who recently finished recording their first new album in over a decade and are operating concurrent to BHP for the first time.

The Black Heart Procession could not have found a more suitable band name. Their songs mirror a triumphant march into the dark unknown. The San Diego bred band has managed to shell out five full length albums but still not much is publicized about the group's origin. What we do know is that Pall Jenkins and Tobias Nathaniel formed BHP in 1997 after their previous band, Three Mile Pilot, disbanded.

James LaValle is a classically trained multi-instrumentalist who has been circling the globe and projecting songs into the void as The Album Leaf since the late 90's, when his former project, Tristeza, disbanded. His songs are warm, earthy, and simultaneously intricate, ambient and modern. His albums are private moments of yearning, loss, hope, and simple pleasures translated for public intimacy. *This post comes from contributor Matt Smith.* Standing at the bar last Monday, about halfway through Black Heart Procession's set at The Parish, we chanced to overhear the following: "Man, these guys are a downer. You wanna jet?" Given that the statement was uttered between two rather frattish types, our first instinct was to scoff, "No shit! This is Black Heart Procession, you clueless plebeians!" Then, it suddenly occurred to us that this show was a downer. We've never desired to be the yes-men surrounding a naked Emperor, and forcing ourselves to take an objective view of a performance by a band we'd otherwise fiercely defend was difficult. Unfortunately, we were forced to agree with our polo-shirted comrades.

Like the wandering ghosts of some long-lost pirate ship, San Diego’s Black Heart Procession will invade The Parish tonight with their moaning, clanking brand of spooky country.
