Located just east of I-35 on 4th St., the getaway from Red River St. that is Scoot Inn hosts three inviting nights of music this weekend. On Friday, when the wind blows in The Low Lows’ doleful lo-fi beauty, ponder upon Brothers and Sisters’ affecting Americana, tango with Mr. Lewis & The Funeral 5’s experiments in punk ‘n’ polka, and order your whiskey neat to The Sideshow Tragedy’s country fried rock. Return and recover on Saturday with a substantial serving of Black Panda’s garage ditties, sample and savor Kingdom of Suicide Lovers’ dark concoctions, dip into Manikin’s absorbing rhythms, and save room for some guest acts (and Sunday’s show) as well.

WOXY will celebrate their move to Austin Sept. 6 at Scoot Inn. Black Before Red, TV Torso, English Teeth and Martin Crane will perform.

Once upon a time a member of Deerhoof, Chris Cohen left that band and has made a new home for his sound in the poppy Cryptacize. After releasing the lovely Mythomania on Asthmatic Kitty, the band has regrouped as a four-piece and are touring in support of the album.

There's not a lack of things to do tonight in Austin, but we'd be remiss to overlook our local darlings in Shearwater. After a busy 2008 touring the U.S. and abroad to support their latest Matador release, Rook (along with a jaunt opening for Coldplay), the ornithologically-obsessed Meiburg & Co. perch (sorry, couldn't help it) on the outside stage tonight at the Mohawk.

So the time is ripe for the 2008 SXSW Music Festival and what better way to lead into that madness than with a host of quality bands at Emo’s to kick off this weekend. Friday marks the CD Release show for local outfit What Made Milwaukee Famous. Officially released on March 4th, What Doesn’t Kill Us will be available for purchase during the show; the album finds the band maturing into a polished rock act while maintaining their keen ear for pop melodies, their expert arrangements of well-crafted tracks, and their penchant for catchy guitar hooks. Check out the video for “Sultan” off the new album via YouTube here.

Two days after SXSW kicks off and our city becomes a living, breathing conglomeration of people from all walks of life, Austinist presents Local Music is Sexy at the PureVolume Ranch. Past Local Music is Sexy events have showcased acts such as The Black Angels, Brothers and Sisters, The Lemurs, The Corto Maltese, Black Before Red, and IV Thieves to name a few. Last year, we remember dancing the night away to Car Stereo (Wars)’ mad mash-ups, drinking free Red Bull (among other things), and having a go at the sweet Wii set up in that little lounge at the location. All in all, an excellent time.

The Mohawk presents a solid double bill of local pop this evening. The Lemurs have been writing new material over the last few months and a handful of those songs will be included in their set tonight. The band enjoyed a stellar 2007 -- highlights included licensing their music to NBC show Las Vegas (as well as an Australian indie flick called Newcastle) and touring with Canadian act Stars. This past Sunday, ME Television telecast a 2nd ME Live! featuring The Lemurs' shimmering melodies in concert at a recent La Zona Rosa gig.

SureFire Media + Promotion along with Do512.com and yours truly present a kick-ass show at Antone’s this week that supercedes all bad-ass shows. A quadruple line-up of fast emerging local acts takes over the famous 4th St. venue this Thursday evening to offer a wide range of pop, rock, and beyond.

101X FM presents this year’s final installment of their Homegrown Live series on Wednesday at Emo’s Lounge. Homegrown Live has featured a broad array of local hotshots this year including Born To Lose and Black Before Red, staying true to their mantra of “showcasing promising local artists and the kick-ass live music venues in Austin.”

Aqueduct aka David Terry, purveyor of fine laptop pop, will be taking the stage this evening at Mohawk. Things one might expect from an Aqueduct show could include hip hop and Journey covers, both of which we're pretty up for. And, though the act is sort of a postmodern one-man band, Terry's usually got a boatload of talented folks rounding out his stage act, so you're not going to get stuck watching some guy operating...

In a town as creative as ours, there is plenty of ongoing chatter about “the next big thing," and (usually) further discussions regarding the viability of the buzz related to those bands. We strive to bring our readers show listings and news updates for some of Austin’s finest, be it Spoon or Ghostland Observatory. Amidst all that, we also do our best to recommend some of the city’s lesser known but equally talented acts....

It must be the week of a major holiday, because there won't be a lot of new beautiful stuff on the walls at Waterloo or End of an Ear this week. If you're anxious for Kelly Rowlands' latest (Ms. Kelly), you're breathing a big sigh of relief right now, but H-town is about as close to home as it gets July 3 (please correct us if we're wrong). The new Madlib effort, Yesterday's New...

Don't forget about Low Line Caller's Residency show at the Mohawk this evening. The Mohawk Residency series continues to bring fantastic local bands together on alternating Tuesdays for your almost mid-week pleasure, and tonight is a good one, considering Shapes Have Fangswill open with their Shins-ish arrangements, and Marc Ferrino of Black Before Red will add his vocal prowess to their usually instrumental set. While we're pondering the ramifications of mathematical entities having the ability...

Shearwater's Jonathan Meiburg and Thor Harris played a gorgeous set of songs (mostly) from the soon-to-be re-rereleased Palo Santo on Sunday afternoon at the Rock N Romp Mohawk. The show also featured readings from Neal Pollack and a performance by Black Before Red....

On Sunday afternoon, Austin Rock N Romp and Book People are sponsoring an all-ages event on the patio at Mohawk featuring Neal Pollack and Shearwater's Jonathan Meiburg. The show will also feature Black Before Red, amps still warm from their Local Music is Sexy 3 performance the night before. Rock N Romp has been putting on all ages rock shows since last summer, and in the coming months will be moving their events to...

In his latest release, Alternadad, Neal Pollack chronicles his experiences as a father and family-man in the early 21st-century. Pollack proves in his fourth bound collection of pages that it is indeed an exciting time to be alive and parenting. Please be sure to read Austinist's exquisite review of Alternadad, an instant American classic. Having said that, we think it's important to let you know that Neal Pollack is coming to Austin. We won't tell...

*The views expressed in The Laurie Show are those of the author and do not represent Austinist as a whole.* -ed. note It’s the time of year when thoughts might turn to mushy things, like Valentine cards and heart-shaped boxes of candy…and all the money that companies are raking in selling this sort of foofy-ness. My question to you is this: Would you like to know what truly says “love” with a capital L-O-V-E?...

Austin's Black Before Red have grabbed the reins of a wagon we've been glad to see getting its spokes dirty lately, a wagon loaded with swelling harmonies, subtly layered multi-instrumentation and compositions reminiscent of some of the greatest songs in America's catalog. Listening to their new album, Belgrave to Kings Circle, is like listening to glistening 70's California pop classics and Sea & Cake's Nassau simultaneously. Marc Ferrino's voice is definitely in the neighborhood...

Already considered the "Best New Club in Austin" by those who know, the Mohawk continues its ever-accelerating expansion with the introduction of the Grizzly Bar, a "happy hour saloon" that will operate inside the Mohawk from 5-8pm on most days. Think of it as a place to enjoy a leisurely post-work drink before really starting your evening programming. The Grizzly Bar will be a daily platform for political banter, beer pyramids, spitting, and arm wrestling....

Tonight KROX presents the latest installment of Homegrown Live, a weekly concert series showcasing up-and-coming Austin bands for the obscenely low and unnecessarily complex price of $1.01 (please note that despite the gimmicky price, paying entirely in pennies or in Canadian change is not considered funny). Tonight's show features indie-dance sensation Clap! Clap!, who've built a solid reputation around their dancetastic, clap-filled live shows (including a dedicated "clap choir") over the course of the last...

C-Side Records' psychedelic folk-rock heroes, The Channel, are playing tonight at The Mohawk, and they'll be joined by The Eames Era, Black Before Red and Go Nova. You might remember what we had to say about The Channel's double CD, Tales From the Two Hill Heart / Sibylline Machine earlier this year: Their double-CD, Tales From the Two Hill Heart / Sibylline Machine is one of those rare double CDs that contains music which...

The following is a weekly column by guest contributor Laurie Gallardo. Hear her on KUT 90.5FM, Friday nights from 11pm-3am! -- The Editors Far too much going on in the weeks ahead, but technically, staying busy keeps me out of trouble. Right?  Well…it’s a good theory.  Hello again, music peeps! I’m compelled to begin this column with self-promotional frivolousness, but what the heck. Keep in mind that next Friday, I won’t be on the air...
