Birds on Lamar Will Give Away Fun Fest Tickets Friday

Next Friday, swing by Birds on Lamar and mention "fun" during check-in. Don't bother calling: you have to actually show up and get your hair did to qualify. The value of these weekend passes are $150. Afraid you'll miss out? You'll have another chance at the same location next Friday.

Like its existing counterparts, the new Birds location features an oversized mural, only this one's in 3-D. Local artist Luther Himes (who, coincidentally, did the artwork for the big summer boat party that we co-sponsored last year) is behind the new retro-inspired work, which needs special blue- and red-tinted glasses to properly view.

In celebration (or mourning) of tomorrow's tax deadline, Birds Barbershop is offering half off all haircuts from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for anyone who utters the phrase "Tax Cut" whilst getting their 'dos did. The offer is only valid at their new East Austin location (1107 East 6th)

Last year's first-ever Fashion Freakout, held at the now-defunct United States Art Authority, was so successful that we couldn't even find parking in the area. Tonight marks the second installment, and promises to be even bigger and bolder as the event organizers—Prototype Vintage Design, New Bohemia, Buffalo Exchange, and 'Laced With Romance'—have taken the catwalk collaboration to The Mohawk. A giant runway show, featuring vintage-influenced clothing and accessories for both sexes, will be interspersed with DJ sets by Tweedy, McNeely, and Bigface, plus a special performance by Hacienda. The show starts at 9 p.m, but we recommend getting there when doors open at 8 p.m., as this one will sell out.

The folks at Birds Barbershop are just as fed up over record gas prices as the rest of us, and they're hoping to alleviate the burden—for a handful of lucky Austinites, at least. Starting tomorrow and running through the end of August, they'll be giving away a $50 gas card every week to one lucky person on their mailing list. You can sign up in-store, or online. [Birds]

Emo’s, as always, powers our evenings with a good amount of solid shows this weekend. Zookeeper and Zykos bring heartfelt indie-rock to the outside stage on Friday while Ume and Haunting Oboe Music take on the inside crowd with belligerent, experimental rock n’ roll.

Chicas, it's your time to get girlie. Birds Barbershop is hosting its second annual Ladies Night with Austin Tidbits at its new location on Burnet on Thursday. If you have two X chromosomes, treat yourself to a few Birds Berry Beauty cocktails (think of umbrellas and bright colors) and achingly sweet treats by Hey Cupcake! and Luxe Sweets. Enjoy the "ladylike" sounds of Michael Hooher and Zykos' Catherine Davis behind the turntables. And get...

Fun Fun Fun Fest captured more than a few hearts last December on a cold winter evening with a three-stage-pronged attack that provided ample genres for everyone in attendance. Some of the stand-out acts included Spoon, The Black Angels, The Octopus Project, Peaches, and Prefuse 73. This year, the fest is back, bigger than before, and a month earlier to boot. November 3rd and 4th will see Waterloo Park transformed into a musical carnival featuring...

Just when we thought Birds Barbershop couldn’t get any more creative, they give us two more awesome reasons to walk in and rock out. Starting today, the Burnet location is hosting “Bubblegum Humpday Happy Hours” every Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. DJ Super K is breaking in the turntables with his collection of bubblegum and saccharine-sweet pop 45s from the 60s. Even if you're not getting your hair cut, shake your tail-feather and sample...

North Austin peeps don't have to go south of Riverside Drive—or even 45th Street—to get their hair cut at Birds Barbershop. A second location recently opened at 6800 Burnet Road. The new store adheres to co-founders' Michael Portman and Jayson Rapaport's "Walk In, Rock Out" philosophy that inspired the original South Lamar store, providing Lone Star beer and live music entertainment on top of $19 Shortcuts and $39 Ladybirds. Birds North has an outdoor...

Birds Barbershop is opening a new north location this September, on 6800 Burnet Road across from Curra's Grill. This shop's decor theme is old-school roller rink arcades. (It would be ultra-rad if you could skate there, too.) Until then, you'll have to get your Ladybirds and 'Hawks trimmed at the South Lamar location. Birds is also sponsoring the Alamo Drafthouse's Austin Air Guitar Finals this Thursday at the Parish, which means they'll be styling the...

Add this to the list of reasons why it's nice to support local businesses: they take care of their own. Over at South Lamar's Birds Barbershops, one of their stylists, Brenda, was recently diagnosed with cancer: We can’t say enough about our stylists. If it wasn’t for their incredible talent, we wouldn’t be able to offer full-glam services like hair extensions and runway updos. And if it wasn’t for the sheer awesomenessness of those like...

Owned by notable relationship and sex therapist Dr. Natasha, South Austin's 365 Days 365 Ways carries a full selection of adult toys marital aides, bachelorette gifts, books, videos and lingerie. Tonight, the boutique is hosting a free "Sex Ed U" class, during which attendees will be given a crash course on the store's wares while indulging...

What a difference a year makes. Since settling into their stylish digs, the local stores at 2110 South Lamar have turned the former site of an old furniture warehouse into one of Austin's hippest destinations for boutique shopping and getting your hair done, rocker style. Tomorrow, the shops have teamed up to celebrate their first anniversary--ok, so many haven't been around for a full year, but the building itself debuted around this time in...

The newest addition to the 2110 South Lamar block—already home to Birds Barbershop, Downstairs, 365 Ways, Roost, and Legendary Beads—is The Waxing Studio, which celebrates its grand opening this Thursday. Billing itself as the city's "first and only all-waxing salon," this new location and the original shop on William Cannon both offer an affordable variety of spa services. In conjunction with their Grand Opening party (wine, $1 eyebrow waxes for the first twenty guests, etc), we're giving away a free waxing courtesy of the folks at the Waxing Studio -- we're not sure which kind, but we'll let you know if you're our lucky winner.
Congrats, A.G.! The Waxing Studio Grand Opening Party

Various photos from this weekend's fashion show at Cream Vintage, sponsored by Birds Barbershop and The Peacock. We're awfully proud of Austinist's own Jackie Young, part of the panel of judges, for conjuring up the category of "best bulge." Photos provided by Birds Barbershop...

Tonight at the Alamo Drafthouse the Flicker Film Festival celebrates the creativity, passion and art of short filmmaking. The Flicker Fest is a great way for nascent filmmakers to get their works screened. All of the movies in competition are shorts that run no longer than 15 minutes and must have originally been shot on film.

In order to help you stay cool, we’re getting together with a few of our friends this weekend to throw a Say Goodbye to Summer party. This Saturday night at Birds Barbershop, we’ll have cool music, cool haircuts and the coolest drinks this side of the equator to help you get your summertime swerve on...

If you're not heading over to the Parish tomorrow night after our party at Birds Barbershop, here are two excellent alternatives: The IV Thieves -- that's "4," mind you -- formerly known as Nic Armstrong and the Thieves, returned to Austin a mere week ago after a whirlwind stateside tour supporting The Pretenders. Originally hailing from the tiny village in England of Nottingham, this lovable foursome now (mostly) call Central Texas their home. They'll be...
