Usually, street closures around the Capitol hail the arrival of one of Austin's many street festivals, where you can listen to a wishy-washy blues-rocker do his best to channel Stevie Ray Vaughn while you eat a turkey leg amongst a sea of fanny-packed families and homemade jewelry vendors. But once a year it means it's Texas Book Festival time. As literary events go in this town, it is the big one. For two days...

In town to raise money for Hillary's campaign at the home of long time Clinton family friend Roy Spence of GSD&M, Bill made a stop at BookPeople where he signed over a thousand copies of his new book, Giving: How Each of Us Can...

After more than six years with our country hog-tied by George W. Bush and his Texas neo-con cronies, it is not hard to feel a nostalgic pull to the nineties. We may not be longing for rap-rock, JNCO jeans or Pauly Shore, but the roaring nineties and their dot-com excess did have some bright spots. Like a good president. (Though even Warren G. Harding looks pretty good right now.) If you are looking for...

The...

Guns don't kill people; vice presidents (almost) do. Guess who's having the Worst Week Ever. We would have to say that local attorney Harry Whittington is definitely in the running. For a few years, labeling someone/thing Metrosexual was all the rage. Yea, it was shallow and trite and oversimplified and actually quite pointless, probably stemming from our need to label everything as “other,” in order to deal with our own neuroses and fears and judgmental attitudes. But it was still shoved down our throats relentlessly. Metrosexuals were the new black, and the identification of the trend was even more tiresome than the trend itself....
Long before we had to suffer through the bumbling speeches, disingenuous double talk, war mongering and religious-right pandering of George W. Bush, Americans enjoyed two terms of prosperity under the leadership of one of the smartest, slickest and most controversial presidents of the 20th century. Historians and citizens alike may remember President Bill Clinton for his extraordinary successes, think first president to balance the budget in 30 years, or they may remember him for his public failures, think health care. But, undoubtedly, his legacy will live in the minds of many due to his private mistakes which, unfortunately, became part of one of the ugliest political battles in recent history. Regardless of his place in history, no one can deny the powerful story of a boy born into the most humble of beginnings in Arkansas only to become a 6-term Governor of Arkansas and 2-term President of the United States.
