The fourth annual Texas 4000 for Cancer bike ride will kick off this weekend. Actually, it's less of a "ride" and more of a "trek." The 44-member cycling team, mostly made up of UT students, will cycle from Austin all the way to Anchorage, Alaska (that's 4,500 miles!) to raise money for the American Cancer Society. It's the longest annual charity bicycle ride in the world, and it kicks off this afternoon from the UT...

With all the hype surrounding high-rise condos and New Urbanism, it is easy to forget that the dominant form of growth in Austin is still 20th century style, car-centric, suburban sprawl. Small developments (like The Shops at Silverado, shown right) or large (like the 425-acre Southpark Meadows, shown above), most new construction in Austin comes in the form of sparse, single-use, single-story sprawl. Southpark Meadows co-opts the language of New Urbanism as a marketing...

If you have already failed and re-upped your New Year’s resolutions more times than you can count, take heart – tomorrow is another day (to fail). No, but seriously, we're fortunate to live in a town where there's a whole subculture of masochists who organize events around such activities as running, biking, swimming, and various combinations thereof. Looking for a torturous fun way to get outside and get your body moving? Then why not...

The Statesman is reporting that another cyclist has been injured in a collision with an automobile. The unnamed woman was struck by an 18-wheeler on FM 1431 and taken to the hospital after suffering head injuries. We sure hope things do not come in 3s. We did notice yesterday, on our bike ride home from work, that people in cars kinda gave us curious glances and other cyclists made slight nods in support. We aren't uber-cyclists or anything and don't think people with cars are evil or any of that self-righteous jazz, but it was interesting to see people behaving a little differently yesterday with that knowledge lingering in the collective consciousness. We could have just been making all those glances up in our heads, though. We mean, we might have a history of minor paranoia-inducing drug use. Maybe.

This weather is absolutely perfect for running and playing outside!

This Thursday night at Ruta Maya, Ghostland Observatory, Tammany Hall and All Points Bulletin join forces to help raise money and awareness in the fight against cancer. The bands are playing a gig benefiting the Texas 4000 for Cancer, a UT student organization whose mission is to spread awareness about cancer. The students’ main source of fundraising is their annual bike ride from Austin to Anchorage. Yes, that Anchorage! So come out to Ruta...
