Big Medium, the force behind the East Austin Studio Tour (EAST), is moving west of I-35 for the first West Austin Studio Tour (WEST). WEST, which will take place May 19 and 20, will be the spring counterpart for autumn’s EAST. Like EAST, WEST will be a free, self-guided tour of artist studios, galleries, and spaces. The boundaries for WEST are west of I-35, east of Mopac, south of HWY 183, and north of I-71/360.

At Big Medium: Fumes + Objective Space
Inspired by the effect of media consumption on the psyche, Douglas Pollard debuts drawings, a large-scale wall mural, and a few additional surprises at Big Medium's Big Gallery tonight. Pollard states, “On some level, I can’t tell the difference between conflicts in the Middle East and a Burger King commercial. We are surrounded by an intangible cloud of content and information which has blended itself into the collective consciousness. This project is an attempt to visually depict the more ethereal qualities of our psychological relationships with contemporary mass media.”
One Work - Jamie Panzer
I work hard to offer variables and layers. Invention is an apparatus that must be experienced. The patient viewer is rewarded. Clouds pass before the light (sun?) at the pace of the second hand on the clock motor. For some, I've noticed, it's too slow for their naked eye.
Texas Biennial Artists - Susi Brister and Carin Rodenborn
From the desktop, one may rely on the digit-click judgment that Brister's work is wholly caught up in William Hundley's flow and simply move on to the next bit of content without a further thought, but in person, the power of this comparison weakens. Brister's two photos at Women and Their Work are much more buttoned-up and ready for a waltz. They anchor to an earlier history of landscape photography and portraiture and get at something quieter and more contemplative than Hundley's slash and splash imagery.

East Austin Studio Tour: Bigger and Better Than Ever

A groundswell of East Austin’s creative culture, this annual event has typically been held over one weekend, right before Turkey Day. But, this year EAST will take place over a span of nine days (November 14th through November 22nd) and include two weekends!
EAST Preview: East Austin Studio Parties!
We're eagerly preparing for this weekend's East Austin Studio Tour; we're plotting our destinations on the map and figuring just how much new artwork can fit in our homes. Although the studio tours don't begin until Saturday, the event kicks off on Friday evening with the Official E.A.S.T. Pre-Party. The party starts at 7pm at the Bolm Warehouses (5305 Bolm Road) and is being hosted by E.A.S.T. organizers from Big Medium studios in collaboration with Bay 6 Gallery. Attendees can pick up an official Tour Guide, snack on refreshments, and enjoy music and dancing courtesy of DJ Anthony Romero. The green-thumbs over at Big Red Sun (1102 E. Cesar Chavez) are also hosting an E.A.S.T. kick off party on Friday from 6:30-9pm. The nursery is celebrating the opening of Judy Paul's new exhibit at the store with art, wine, and a fire in the fire pit.
