We have a big crush on Tom Perrotta. We lurve the tales he crafts about ordinary people who end up in extraordinary predicaments because they just can't seem to bring themselves to say what they are thinking, even when knowing that it would save them a boat load of grief. We identify with being well-intentioned but sometimes ill-advised and from time to time believe that our own inner monologue is actually the narration for......

We hate it when things end. Seriously. We cry at funerals (end of life), weddings (end of freedom), heck we even cried at the end of the last Harry Potter book for no other reason that that it was all over. Needless to say, we are all sadfaced at the moment because our favorite excuse to sit on our rear ends all summer is coming to a close this week. Yep, that's right, the Paramount......

We're sure you already know this because, after all, what else could you have possibly been doing on Sunday night other than watching the 2007 Tony Awards broadcast live on CBS? It's not like there was anything else on TV. Nevertheless, in case you missed it, former Austinite Julie White scored a Best Actress Tony for playing a lesbian Hollywood agent in Douglas Carter Beane's The Little Dog Laughed. White was nominated alongside the likes......

We recently caught the new work Wireless-Less during its run at the Cohen New Works Festival. The play continues its run this weekend—Thursday through Sunday at the Blue Theatre—as a part of Refraction Arts' Fuse Box Festival. Wireless-Less is a trippy, fun fantasy about the human consequences of constant access to technology. Watching this thoroughly enjoyable piece, we were reminded somewhat of David Cronenberg’s movies, in which humans are always brushing up against tech......

The Second Annual Fantastic Fest is over, and though we’re happy to finally catch up on our sleep, we can’t wait to go back next year. Eight full days of the best new horror, sci-fi, Asian, thriller and genre films screened at the coolest theatre in North America – what more could we ask for? (Okay, maybe free beer, but still.) In addition to the big-name Austin premieres (including Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning,......

*This review comes from new Austinist contributor Rebecca Reed* With its grace notes of post-911 disillusionment, Kyle Henry’s Room screened to an enthusiastic hometown crowd at The Alamo on South Lamar, kicking off its local theatrical run. Julia Barker is a wife, mother, bingo parlor matron and telephone book delivery person who is hitting the proverbial wall. Or maybe four of them. Episodes of excruciating head pain provide her glimpses of a place that......

You might feel lost and confused and out of place in this conservative, W voting, war loving society (well, half of it), but just remember this next time you are thinking about a one way ticket to Canada: Jon Stewart is hosting the Oscars! Y'all, did you hear us? Jon Stewart! Something has to be right in the world. We don't pretend to be experts, but our predictions are: Best Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman......

Ahhh, it’s that time of year again – can you smell the celebrity sweat in the air? Oscar time, baby! The 78th annual Academy Awards will air March 5 on ABC. Plan your party now: gather your friends together, don your Oscar de la Renta (that was kind of a pun, see?), break out the Dom Perignon Andre and the brie, place your bets and watch the magic unfold. The absolute best part about......

For what it's worth, the Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning. We like watching the Golden Globes; they are so laid-back and relaxed in comparison to the pretentious Academy Awards. Of course, they don't always choose the same winners . . . Babe won the Golden Globe for best musical/comedy the year it was nominated, after all. And while Jennifer Garner has won a Golden Globe, she has yet to win an Emmy......

This is the first post from our new contributor, Elizabeth... Now that you've gone to all the free museums you can, surely you need something to do this evening. So here's where we remind you that the Emmys are on tonight (7pm, KEYE CBS42). We don't make as much of an effort to watch the Emmys as we do to watch the Oscars (and yes, even the Golden Globes). We still have opinions on......
