Austin Farmer's Market Makes Greenlight Magazine's Top 10 List
As farmer's markets gain popularity nationwide, Austinites can stand proud as the Austin Farmer's Market does its part to support local farmers. Greenlight Magazine highlights the top 10 markets in the nation in its most recent edition, and Austin hits the list. According to the magazine: This growers-only market is limited to local (within 150 miles) farms, and boasts a distinct Southwestern flavor. Pick up Creole pralines, pecans, as well as heirloom zipper, cream, black-eyed,...

As the days go by, things get more intense at Slam Central. Each night, votes for the team bouts are tallied, and teams and individuals learn where they stand. The scores as of the wee hours of Wednesday morning have been posted, and while it's way too early to start popping the bubbly, we're excited to see Team Ego's in second place! First is Team Killeen (please tell us there's at least one slamming soldier among them...how cool is that??); third is Team Berkeley. You can see the entire list of scores from Tuesday's bouts here.
Last Week in -IST
It was a week of bizarre, embarassing headlines at DCist. The trial of the local administrative law judge who sued his cleaners for $54 million over a pair of missing pants left everyone shaking their heads. Then the capital city was nearly brought to its knees, twice, by poop. Finally D.C. contemplated taking Vermont's place as a state and marveled at the GOP lessons learned from the "Macaca Moment." Due to some sad shootings in...
Austin: Greener Than Al Gore and Melissa Etheridge Combined
Apparently our fair city is besting all others when it comes to "cleantech" (green technology) startups. According to the Austin Business Journal, we're home to seven of these forward-looking paragons of environmental innovation, including startups developing wind and geothermal energy technologies, and one working on something mindblowingly called "Internet-controlled irrigation."

UT Establishes First-Ever Indoor Environmental Quality Program
UT Austin's Environmental Engineering Professor Richard Corsi was recently awarded a $2.9 million research grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to establish a new graduate program at the university aimed at studying indoor environmental quality. The five-year grant was propelled by studies indicating that most of us spend a whopping 18 hours inside for every hour outside, and that air quality indoors can often be much worse than we thought:

My Big Fat Gay Rugby Extravaganza
It was while trolling Gawker that we found out about this weekend's huge 2006 Mark Bingham Cup, the biennial tournament of the International Gay Rugby Association and Board named after a player from UC Berkeley who died onboard on September 11th.
Austin's New Courthouse Gets Modern Stylings
Construction wouldn't begin until 2008 at the earliest, as Austin is only one of many on the U.S. General Services Administration's list of proposed projects.

And we apologize for the delay in posting this; one word: meetings. Another word: narcolepsy. We're bummed that We Are Scientists decided to bail on their Austin show, but nevertheless there's a full week ahead of us. Pace yourselves,...
Diversity in Austin: UT Ranked Among Top Undergraduate Engineering Programs
From the pages of Austin Business Journal, we found out today that Black Issues in Higher Education, a magazine whose focus couldn't be clearer from their title, ranked UT Austin as the fifth top producer of minority undergraduates in their annual rankings. UT's highest specialized ranking was in the College of Engineering, where they placed third in the nation - only slightly less diverse than UC Berkeley and Georgia Tech. Nearby Texas A&M was...
Revenge of the Nerds!
Austin police arrested former UC Berkeley and UT engineering professor Gary Wise yesterday, on charges of deadly conduct and stalking. It seems like the once-tenured professor [allegedly] spent the past six years harassing his former colleagues, beginning with a few relatively innocuous obscene phone calls and escalating all the way to last Friday, when he went off on a wild shooting rampage in North and Central Austin. Luckily, no one was hurt, but Wise did...
Diversity in Austin
Austinist finds it troubling that a recent study conducted by the City of Austin indicated a serious disparity in the quality of life and economic development opportunities available to the city's African-American population, as compared to other members of the community. What's more disconcerting are the results of interviews conducted at a Monday night forum, where several young African-American college students expressed intentions to move away from the city after graduation, echoing the sentiments of their peers.
