When you first read about David Williams, his story seems fake, like some massive This Is Spinal Tap or Joaquin Phoenix put-on. It’s straight out of VH1’s Behind The Music: he dabbled in a few Denton-area post-punk bands, then moved to L.A. and helped produce a bonafide hip-hop classic, and then moved back to Austin with a nasty drug habit that he’s since kicked. And now he’s starting yet another chapter as the frontman for locals Beautiful Supermachines. You can catch the man, the myth, the legend tonight at Beerland as part of The Rumble, a local concert series presented in part by your friendly Austinist.

Preview: From the Mind of Adi Residency Series #6
Adi Anand’s mind is an open book for all those chosen ramblers yearning and burning for good local music, food and art, and anyone else looking to fight the mid-week malaise. The sixth installment of the From the Mind of Adi residency series at the Mohawk is going off tonight, with the showmaster recuperated and rested up from Saturday’s Pachanga Latino Music Fest, highlight video to come soon on Transmission Entertainment.
Le Diamant Brut: Beautiful Supermachines & Choir of Young Believers
What’s the Deal: We’re bringing you another international band you should know this week. Choir of Young Believers are a sometimes haunting folk rock group from Copenhagen, Denmark. Their members rotate, but always include singer/songwriter/guitarist Jannis Noya Makrigiannis, and can also mean a backing choir of what we can only assume are indeed young believers. We know that their Danish homeland believes in them, so much so that they’ve backed the band to score some No. 1 hits and at least one Danish Music Award.
Weekend Music Preview: Tre Orsi, Beautiful Supermachines @ Beerland [Tonight]
Expect plenty of guitar fueled explosions from headliners Tre Orsi. The Denton band is one of only two non-Austin acts on Matador Records’ recent Casual Victim Pile compilation. And since they missed out on the release extravaganza at the same venue earlier this month, Friday night offers a great opportunity to fill in the blanks. Prior to that, the always impressive Beautiful Supermachines deliver ringleader David Williams’ experiments in euphony, The Distant Seconds peddle a smorgasbord of sophisticated pop tunes, and Nervous Curtains brew eerie concoctions via Sean Kirkpatrick’s piano prowess. The show serves as a record release of some sort for all the bands. Why bother saving your energy for SXSW when there’s quality live music on offer tonight?
Weekend Music Preview: Mike Farris & The Roseland Rhythm Revue @ Antone's [Friday]
Mike Farris’ resume includes a stint as the singer for Double Trouble and that honor alone should perk up blues fans’ ears as he brings his energetic live show to Antone’s tonight. Prior to the aforementioned shift, Harris made his name as the vocalist for Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies -- the band released three albums during the 90’s, including a self-titled debut full-length on Atlantic Records. Lately, Harris has been showcasing his versatility with The Roseland Rhythm Revue, churning out a stirring brand of Americana that touches upon decades of soul, gospel, and blues.
Beautiful Supermachines Celebrate Shut Up Release @ Beerland [Tonight, With Tre Orsi & Distant Seconds]
Despite the fact that this record is a debut, none of these guys are first-timers. Singer, songwriter and guitarist David Williams has been around just about every block there is musically; he's performed with Texas punk outfit Vomit Pigs, post-punked with Self Is On the Throne, and even made his way through NYC's underground hip-hop scene with the Jungle Brothers. Now settled in Austin with his current bandmates, Williams finds himself nestled in a niche somewhere between post-punk and something like classic rock (think: Pavement).
