Austin Film Festival Preview: Calvin Marshall

Calvin Marshall, directed by Gary Lundgren, captures baseball's charms by introducing us to a few archetypal characters - the gruff, washed up coach who may or may not have a secret soft side, the optimistic player with more heart than talent, and a beautiful woman with a habit of throwing curve balls.

Texas baseball coach Augie Garrido was sentenced to four days in jail and fined $500 for his drunk-driving conviction back in February, reports the Statesman.

The road to Omaha, which began back in February for Texas and LSU, ends tonight as the two teams meet in the deciding game of the College World Series (6 pm, ESPN).

Following a 7-6 extra-inning loss on Monday, the Texas Longhorns are on the brink of elimination in the College World Series. Texas must win tonight to force a third and deciding game against the LSU Tigers.

It's a college baseball clash of the titans as Texas takes on LSU tonight in the finals of the College World Series in Omaha. The traditional powers have combined for 11 national titles and both have reached the best-of-three final series without losing a game in Omaha. Tonight's game begins at 6 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN2.

Texas and Arizona State play again tonight to determine who will advance to the final round of the College World Series in Omaha. Texas is undefeated in the double-elimination tournament, so the Sun Devils must defeat the Longhorns twice this weekend to move on. A win by Texas either tonight or Sunday puts the Longhorns in the final matchup against either Arkansas or LSU.

Texas survived an ugly first-round game against Southern Mississippi, and their reward is a matchup with one of the top pitchers in the College World Series: Arizona State's Mike Leake. The Longhorns will counter with their own ace, Chance Ruffin, who is coming off a complete-game victory over TCU in the super regional round. Tonight's game will begin at 6 pm and be shown on ESPN2.

The Longhorn baseball team begins their quest for seventh national championship Sunday, taking on Southern Mississippi in the opening round of the College World Series.

After splitting a pair of games over the weekend, Texas and TCU meet again tonight to determine who goes to the College World Series.

In less than 24 hours, the Texas baseball team put together a pair of classic moments to win a regional title and move one step closer to the College World Series.

The Texas baseball team has been selected as the No. 1 seed in the NCAA baseball tournament. After winning the Big 12 tournament title on Sunday, The Longhorns will host one of 16 regional tournaments that begin Friday.

Our colleagues over at Houstonist have taken Roger Clemens up on his offer to answer reader questions. Since Clemens is a former Longhorn, we figured there wasn't any harm in inviting Austinist readers to join in as well.

UT Suspends Garrido For Four Games After Drunk-Driving Arrest

University of Texas baseball coach Augie Garrido will miss the first four games of the season on suspension after his arrest last week on drunk-driving charges.

The report, which put the blame on both players and management for the drug problem throughout the game, was released by former U.S. Senator George Mitchell after 20 months of study.

SFist witnessed a new apartment building tszuj the skyline with spectacular, gaudy turquoise aplomb, the (informal) renaming of the Mission/SOMA neighborhood border, the return of the Maltese Falcon, the Mayor Gavin Newsom mea culpa-ing over his Hawaiian getaway during the oil spill, and double-decker buses hitting the streets of San Francisco. Oh, and some baseball player named Barry Bonds is a liar whose pants, it seems, are totally on fire. LAist continues to cover the...

Sure, family-friendly films, "green" cinema and the corresponding warm-fuzzies you get from caring about your lil' ones and The Earth are nice. But historically, motion pictures have always been driven by violence, outlandishness and the public's insatiable and prurient interest in watching things on film that they don't necessarily want to see in real life. In this hallowed vein, the AFF Dark Matters Series explores subject matter ranging from blood-spattered vegans to Korean hillbilly gangs...

When Will Stewart of Austin bought a ticket in the outfield seats for the Chicago White Sox-LA Angels game on Sunday, he had no idea he was about to become a part of history. But he was in the right place at the right time as Jim Thome's game-winning home run bounced off the rows behind Stewart and into his hands. It was Thome's 500th career home run, a mark that only 23 players in...

The Houston Astros showed their appreciation for Round Rock Express manager Jackie Moore, calling the 50-year veteran up to the major leagues to serve as bench coach for the rest of the 2007 season. The 68-year-old Moore has been in professional baseball for half a century, starting as a catcher and outfielder in the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox organizations. He played one season in the majors, spending the majority of the 1965...

Researchers at the University of Texas have found that umpires are more likely to call strikes for pitchers of the same race or ethnicity, according to an article at LiveScience. The study analyzed every pitch from the 2004 through 2006 major league baseball seasons in an effort to determine whether racial discrimination figured into an umpire's decision to call a strike or a ball. “Umpires judge the performance of players every game, deciding whether...

As summer draws to a close, it's frustrating at times to realize what you never got around to during the season. Whether you meant to rent a boat, go to the beach, or visit the ballpark, sometimes the time just flies right by. Thankfully, the Wine and Food Foundation of Texas have given all foodies an excuse to drive up to Round Rock and check out the Dell Diamond before summer's end (though there...

Same thing, another week. As you move on to the next line on the calendar, you're still out there trying to make a connection. Sadly you let most of them slip by without saying a word. We understand, no one wants to be overzealous and get shot down. If only you had some place to find a second chance. Oh yes, Missed Connections. If only you had someone to sort through and find the...

Cedar Park, Pflugerville and Round Rock placed among Forbes magazine's fifty fastest growing suburbs in the United States from 2000-2006. Among the many Texas cities on the list, Round Rock was 12th, Pflugerville was 7th and Cedar Park was 3rd. Forbes discussed some of the tradeoffs of unregulated suburban sprawl: low housing costs, but high transportation costs - providing the example that in Houston, transportation costs are the No. 1 household expense, according to...

It's always awesome when Austinites earn national recognition — unless it's coming from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Back in May, a 20-something-year-old woman robbed a Northwest Austin Wachovia bank, while sporting a UT cap and a rather confident smile. The sassy lady evidently had such a good go of her first robbery that she took her one-woman-act to the west coast. According to the FBI's "WANTED" poster, the "Ponytail Bandit" is believed to have also robbed banks in Roseville, California, and Lynnwood, Washington. In all three cases, her M.O. remained the same: shoulder-length blonde ponytail pulled through the back of a baseball cap, she'd simply saunter into the building, demand money from a teller, and walk out. She's also characterized by a rather unique waiting line stance: arms crossed and shoulders slouching forward ever so slightly, the stick-thin Ponytail Bandit bears a striking resemblance to one Montgomery Burns. Those with info on this fugitive are invited to ring the FBI at 202-324-3000.

Thanks for the tip, Robert S!

We don't know about where you are, but it seems like spring can't decide whether or not to happen. Some days are warm, some days are cold, and sometimes you aren't sure which. Baseball may have started up (and soccer/football winding down) but it still seems cold out there. Unless it's not. Anyways, onto the -ists. Austinist happily anticipated fall's Austin City Limits, even though they're not fully recovered from South By Southwest. In...
