This Sunday, grab a friend, grab a kite and head down to Zilker Park for a local tradition that is over 50 years older than SXSW and over 70 years older than ACL Fest. If we're talking about true Austin, the Zilker Park Kite Festival can't be beat.

Looks like ACL Fest organizers have chosen Groundhog Day to release their mildly discounted multi-passes. 3-day passes priced at $150 including service charges are on sale now at ACLFest.com.

You may not have noticed, but Maker Faire is just around the corner—less than two weeks away on October 20-21. Among all of the homemade, groovylicious goods, we’re especially excited about the Zimbabwean-style Rattletree Marimba band—playing their gigantic instruments, which are hand-crafted by a band member. We first saw the group while hauling our sweaty, sticky selves home from ACL. Right there on Barton Springs Road, Rattletree was infusing the Heineken-sponsored, AT&T corporate-ness of ACL...

Austin has a love/hate relationship with bikes. Love Lance. Hate the Lance-wannabes cruising FM-1826, slowing down the burnt-orange pickups on their way to the Salt Lick. Love biking the Hike-and-Bike trail. Hate slaloming between kids and dogs on a busy Saturday. Love the idea of bike lanes and bike commuting. Hate actual bikers slowing down traffic and swerving into the street because of cars parked in the bike lanes. Love reducing traffic and pollution...

With all the recent responses, we get it - you're passionate about food. Austin is no longer a one chicken fried steak town with a burgeoning fine dining scene and three "best new chef" honorees by Food and Wine Magazine. In that spirit, the city has announced plans for its fifth annual industry-specific start-up conference: Ingredients for Success: Opening a Restaurant. The one-day forum, sponsored by the City of Austin Small Business Development Program...

Unless you frequent the Hike and Bike Trail or attend Austin High School, you may not have noticed the recent construction of a lime green wall and several over-sized pieces of fruit on the southwest corner of Veterans Drive and Lake Austin Boulevard. These new additions to a popular West Austin corner, already host to Magnolia Cafe, Thundercloud Subs and Deep Eddy Cabaret, are attributed to the good people at Daily Juice down on...

Local developers Perry Lorenz and Larry Warshaw (responsible for many Eastside condo projects) and Rick Engel (co-owner of Austin Java) have a contract to buy the Shady Grove RV Park from Susan Toomey Frost, and plan to turn the area into ... wait for it ... condos! The nearby Pecan Grove and Mobile Manor trailer parks, though, are not yet scheduled for condification. The plan, shown above, would create two strips of condos perpendicular...

Tigersblood and Wedding Cake with Cream? Fuzzy Navel with Hill Country Berry? Banana and Chocolate with Cream? Root Beer with Ice Cream on the bottom?

The ACL Fest site put up an announcement at some point today that 3-day passes are once again available for $130 at the ACL Box Office on Barton Springs Road. While this is good news for those who feared being shut out of Saturday's acts, we suggest trolling ACL Fest's message board and Craigslist for tickets first: the 3-day passes are selling there for $95-$110. Finally, don't forget that you can pick up your...

The Task Force appointed by City Council to suggest new zoning regulations for the suburbs near downtown will present its suggestions to the Planning Commission tonight at 6:30 P.M. in the Assembly Room (1st floor) of Town Lake Center (Austin Energy), 721 Barton Springs Road. They'll present them to City Council on Thursday, May 25, 2006 at 6:00 P.M. at the Austin City Hall, Council Chambers, 301 W. 2nd Street. The suggested zoning restrictions would allow for the larger of a 2,300-square-foot home or a home whose square footage is 40 percent of the lot size.

The bloated government agency known as FEMA recently issued a new set of preliminary floodplain maps for Travis County, moving some previously untouched properties into the new floodplain area and others out. If you're now in one of these sections of town, take heed: purchase flood insurance before the new maps are made official next year and you'll save a bit on rates. This applies to homeowners, renters and businessess. Tonight and tomorrow night, the...

Austinist favorite and Barton Springs Rd. stalwart The Daily Juice is celebrating its Third Birthday this month. We popped in to give our congratulations and to sip on the juice of the day: fresh coconut water, bananas and spirulina, served right out of a chopped-open coconut. We make into the Juice whenever we are thirsting for some fruity or veggie goodness, and sometimes just to shoot the breeze with Co-Owner Matt Shook and his...

Get your costumes out 'cause Carnaval is coming to Austin this Saturday! It is one of our favorite annual events in Austin because we love to dress up in costume, dance to Brazilian music and join in on a conga line (or three). Bring your dancin' shoes, your hollow leg to fill with libations and sharpen those people watching tools, as you can be assured a healthy dose of nudity and outrageous costumes. See,...

Tonight at the Green Mesquite BBQ, the folks of Dirty Dog Self-Serve Dogwash are putting on Music & Mutts, the first in a series of Spring shindigs for local dog lovers.

Nestled in Zilker Park, Barton Springs Pool Barton Springs Pool is three acres of ice-cold full-body refreshment surrounded by several more acres of basking-in-the-sun. Like puppies or crushes, Barton Springs may seem like one of those things that brook no blogging. Everyone knows it; everyone loves it. What else is there to say?

South Austin favorite and Barton Springs Road stalwart The Daily Juice celebrated its Second Anniversary yesterday. We at the Austinist popped in to give our congratulations and to sip on the juice of the day: fresh coconut water, bananas and spirulina, served right out of a chopped-open coconut. Having celebrated a friend's 30th birthday the night before, co-owner and store manager Matt Shook assured us that the coconut was the way to go for...
