Look no further than Beerland Saturday night to find some of Austin’s most interesting fledgling indie bands. Headlining is Til We’re Blue Or Destroy, a 9-piece communal rock group utilizing every sound at their disposal. That means occasional horns, digital sounds and synthesizers, vibes, cross-gender choruses and even electronic vocal effects. They could use some wood blocks though. Just a thought. Then, there’s The Corto Maltese, who already gain major points for naming themselves......

The Unbearables brought their rock-opera concept to Dougherty Arts Center last year in the form of Bitten! A Zombie Rock Odyssey. Although we were unable to catch that spectacle, the assorted jams on the band’s MySpace page have us day-dreaming about the possible storyline. The band brings its catchy pop and witty lyrics to the Mohawk tonight for what promises to be a grand ol’ time. Supporting the bill are local shoe-gazers Ringo Deathstarr and......

Overheard at Austin High: Like, holy crap, guys. OMG! LYLAS! Listen up! Welcome to the Halloween edition of This Week in Theatre, and the first time since we’ve been in Austin that some company hasn’t produced a play about mystical and spooky stuff to commemorate this festive occasion. So, in lieu of seeing a “horror” play this weekend—an event where busty blondes disappear for no reason, only to return later after a highly unfortunate series of events has stripped them down to their underwear; or, you......

If you're hanging out at First Thursday tonight on South Congress, and you see a bunch weirdos in tattered clothes, wandering about, eyes sullen and stinking of rotting flesh, here's what to do: -Run -Play dead -Get behind something, anything -Throw steak or body parts to distract them They're zombies. Can you sing? Do you like to eat brains? Then Loaded Gun Theory needs you! We don't normally post audition notices, but (a) this show sounds like too damn much fun, and (b) a little birdie told us that LGT ran into a hitch getting their notice into the local press. So here's the deal. If you know someone who loves to sing -- who, as Tim Thomas says "you NEVER, EVER bring on......

Elizabeth Cobbe, our esteemed colleague over at the Austin Chronicle, has put together a great article profiling the top ten up-and-comers in Austin's "rebel" theatre scene. As you may have noticed, Austinist has a weak spot for rebellious types, so we were excited to find the new punks on the block listed in one handy, helpful spot. (And to give full disclosure we were indeed pleased the company co-helmed by Austinist's own Jonathon Morgan......
