SXSW Comedy Preview: Austinist Talks To Aziz Ansari

SXSW Comedy Preview: Austinist Talks To Aziz Ansari

Aziz Ansari gets SXSW. While you know him best for his role on MTV sketch comedy show Human Giant (which also features Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer), Ansari is also a music nerd. He has a blog, writes comedy bits about music, and can't help but mock the indie scene we all partake in. For those less familiar with Ansari, here's a quick primer: "Shittiest Mixtape Boombox Blast", "Clell Tickle: Marketing Guru", "Indie Ad Exec", "Other Music" more ›

SXSW Interactive And Music Preview: Austinist Interviews Eugene Mirman

SXSW Interactive And Music Preview: Austinist Interviews Eugene Mirman

Eugene Mirman is much funnier than you. A mainstay of New York's alternative comedy scene, Mirman's profile has been even higher of late. In February, his Comedy Central Presents special debuted, and earlier this year, he was asked to cover the New Hampshire primaries for 236.com. He can also be seen as Jemaine and Bret's strange landlord in HBO's Flight Of The Conchords. A multi-year veteran of SXSW, Mirman is hosting this year's Web Awards at SXSW Interactive and is also performing at multiple SX venues during the music festival. more ›

SXSW News & Rumor Updates: 430 Bands, Full Line-Up Soon

As everyone waits for the laundry list of over 1,500+ bands that SXSW should release late this week or early next (going by last year), here are a few bits of SX news to tide you over. - This Crowe Has Flown: The Black Crowes have canceled their appearance at Stubb's. This is likely because (a) they have a record deal, (b) they have a loyal fanbase, (c) critics have already judged them for better or worse, and thus, (d) there was no reason for them to play SX in the first place. - Okkervil River w/ Roky Erickson: In a move that will draw in some tourists along with the locals, the Austin Music Awards will feature Okkervil and Roky - playing together - as a headliner. Let's just say that this will be trippy and special. more ›

Comedy CD Review: Eugene Mirman's "En Garde, Society"

Comedy CD Review: Eugene Mirman's "En Garde, Society"

In case you've missed it, there's a comedy revolution brewing in New York right now. Comics like Todd Barry, Demitri Martin, and Aziz Ansari have been drawing huge audiences of hipsters and regular folk alike with satire that owes far more to the silliness and irony of Steve Martin and Eddie Izzard than to the lowbrow Comedy Central/Def Comedy Jam nonsense that's infested comedy clubs for a decade. Among the brightest lights of the... more ›
