  • In another sad and ridiculous news, a Wichita Falls woman has been indicted for selling her daughter. Tina Valdez admitted to pawning off her teenage daughter for three thousand dollars. Okay, the whole concept of this is unfathomable to us, so after we ponder why a mother would even think to sell her daughter away, we wonder: why only three thousand dollars? We can't put our heads around it.

  • A woman in South Austin was taking out the trash yesterday when she stumbled upon a suspicious-looking device outside her house. This contraption, a metal pipe wrapped in electrical tape, turned out to be what Austin Police are calling an "improvised explosive device," essentially a catch-all term for a homemade bomb. Austin Police Department's Bomb Squad safely detonated the explosive. It's currently believed that yesterday's discovery was unrelated to last week's attempted bombing of the...

Texas wines have improved dramatically since I landed in Austin (from California – gasp!!) 12 years ago. I have always enjoyed the red wines of Llano Estacado in Lubbock. I also enjoy Fall Creek Granite Reserve, and the red wines of Alamosa Vineyards in Tow. For the best $8.00, “Supermarket Wine” around, try Fall Creek Chenin Blanc. You’ll be surprised!"

The state government has been trying and trying to come up with ideas as to how Texas might, you know, start paying for public schools. They keep convening and reconvening and , Texas public school ratings keep getting worse. No one can understand it. It's a mystery, like pyramids.

In a former life this Austinist was a soccer player. Not of the gifted and talented variety, but more the tireless and enthusiastic kind. Since leaving the confines of public schools, we have also left behind organized sport. We played a couple season with Austin Women’s Soccer League but we have drifted toward more individual sports. We don’t know what that says about us, but we're fine with that. We were, however, nostalgic seeing...
