Over the last several months, the Austin Parks Department has been accepting public nominations for naming the new downtown Austin park on the south shore of Lady Bird Lake. Located west of the Palmer events center, just upstream from the Ann Richards bridge, the new city park features an ultra-cool high-tech fountain.

Next week, the City of Austin will officially unveil Town Lake Park, the latest chunk of land to join the already expansive family of city parks. Austin Parks and Recreation are responsible for some 206 parks, 26 greenbelts and 12 nature preserves, totaling a whopping 16,682 acres. Add 20 acres to that total on August 29, when the city officially celebrates the opening of Town Lake Park. Where is this all coming from, you ask?...

Thanks to yesterday's freak thunderstorms and subsequent flooding, Barton Springs Pool is again closed. Barring another Barton Creek flood, the pool should reopen on Thursday, though we wouldn't bet on it: Austin's extended forecast shows scattered thunderstorms for at least 9 out of the next 10 days. It appears that SXSW is going carbon-neutral this year. The 250 metric tons of carbon they produce annually—if you're curious (we were), 18% of that comes from office gas and electric; 27% from their business travel; and 55% from the juice they use at all of the venues during the week in question—will be offset by their purchase of 376MW of Texas wind energy carbon credits from Green Mountain Energy Company. The company's also given a $5000 donation to the Austin Parks Department, earmarked "for the purchase and maintenance of native trees."

In honor of Austin's rite of spring known as Eeyore's Birthday Party, the Eastwoods Neighborhood Association recently commissioned a sculpture of the woebegone donkey, to be placed in Eastwoods Park--the original site of the annual fête. Local area parks are in much need of improvement. We think more poop bag dispensers along local trails, more waste receptacles and less poison ivy would be nice. The AustinParks Foundation takes in to consideration specific requests that local Austinites make to improve neighborhood parks.
