Over the last several months, the Austin Parks Department has been accepting public nominations for naming the new downtown Austin park on the south shore of Lady Bird Lake. Located west of the Palmer events center, just upstream from the Ann Richards bridge, the new city park features an ultra-cool high-tech fountain.

Next week, the City of Austin will officially unveil Town Lake Park, the latest chunk of land to join the already expansive family of city parks. Austin Parks and Recreation are responsible for some 206 parks, 26 greenbelts and 12 nature preserves, totaling a whopping 16,682 acres. Add 20 acres to that total on August 29, when the city officially celebrates the opening of Town Lake Park. Where is this all coming from, you ask?...
Thanks to yesterday's freak thunderstorms and subsequent flooding, Barton Springs Pool is again closed. Barring another Barton Creek flood, the pool should reopen on Thursday, though we wouldn't bet on it: Austin's extended forecast shows scattered thunderstorms for at least 9 out of the next 10 days. In the meantime, Austin Parks and Recreation Department is keeping Deep Eddy Pool open for extended hours, from 6am-9pm daily. Admission is free between 6am-8am. Photo of Barton...
You look like you need a cupcake, and that is just what you will get tonight when the Austin Parks Foundation and the Alamo Drafthouse bring you Election, the second installment in the spring Movies in the Park series. However, that cupcake will be laced with arsenic icing and a heavy dose of satire extract. When we first saw Election back in the late 90’s, high school was still fresh enough in our minds that...
You really are lucky to live in Austin, a metropolis with almost 17,000 acres of land dedicated to parks, recreation and preservation. A city that takes pride in its parks and all of the outdoor activites they lend themselves to, Austinites certainly values their greenspace and quality of life. These parks are used regularly for outdoor concerts, exercising, commuting or leash-free dog recreation and you've certainly taken advantage of them at some point. It...
It appears that SXSW is going carbon-neutral this year. The 250 metric tons of carbon they produce annually—if you're curious (we were), 18% of that comes from office gas and electric; 27% from their business travel; and 55% from the juice they use at all of the venues during the week in question—will be offset by their purchase of 376MW of Texas wind energy carbon credits from Green Mountain Energy Company. The company's also given a $5000 donation to the Austin Parks Department, earmarked "for the purchase and maintenance of native trees."
In honor of Austin's rite of spring known as Eeyore's Birthday Party, the Eastwoods Neighborhood Association recently commissioned a sculpture of the woebegone donkey, to be placed in Eastwoods Park--the original site of the annual fête. The sculpture, depicted by a model to the right, is being made, pro bono, by Austin architect/craftsman/sculptor/horse racer/cattle breeder Bob Coffee. Unfortunately, it looks as though the Eastwoods Neighborhood Association is short a few bucks of the total funds...
Sometime this fall, the city is finally going to take steps to demolish that half-assed Intel building. The eyesore has been stagnant for so long, we can't remember what was there before it existed. Probably a Liberty Lunch or Armadillo equivalent that became prey to evergrowing corporate needs to just build something. Intel pulled the plug on construction in 2001 with no intention to complete it. Now we know there were a gajillion cool things...
The Alamo Drafthouse, Austin Parks Foundation and AT&T have teamed up to bring us a special series of free entertainment featuring live music, movie screenings and special guest stars. Four Sundays between now and October 7th will feature evening screenings and musical acts for the whole family. So, why sit at home watching football on a Sunday night when you can enjoy a nice cool Texas summer outside among family, friends, bands and legends of...
Bartering a red paper clip got Kyle MacDonald a new house. Direct your sights to bigger and better because bigger is better. Yeah; thank God we're in Texas. Lily Allen was rising to stardom somewhere until she admitted she'd celebrate her first Number 1 single with coke. Smart girl. In Quebec, a 7-year-old boy's legs had to be amputated after a water park accident. Anyone want our coupons for Schlitterbahn? We won't be needing...
Local area parks are in much need of improvement. We think more poop bag dispensers along local trails, more waste receptacles and less poison ivy would be nice. The AustinParks Foundation takes in to consideration specific requests that local Austinites make to improve neighborhood parks. The Neighborhood Park Grants Program was created as a means to stregthen the community by way of involvement. The Foundation will match up to $2500 in funds and volunteer time...
Condos, anyone? High Street Residential, a division of the Trammell Crow Company, has broken ground at Red River and Davis (yes, above the secret tunnel) on a 22 story condo building (17 floors of condos over five floors of parking). The building will be linked to a 26 story Kimpton hotel/condo being built next door. WDG Architecture, which also did the Milago, is the architect, while Duncan and Miller Design is doing the interiors....
South Austin beermeisters Rob and Amy Cartwright of Independence Brewing Company are kicking off a campaign this summer to help out the Barton Springs Greenbelt. Through the Freestyle Summer Fund, they'll donate a buck from every case of Freestyle Wheat Beer sold until mid September to the Austin Parks Foundation, to help out with various greenbelt preservation projects. To launch this effort, they're inviting you out to their Independence Day Celebration on Saturday, where you'll...
Ok, not so much "secret" as "we hadn't heard about it yet." Also, "revealed" isn't really accurate.
Like most attendees, our biggest frustration with last year's Austin City Limits Festival was the wretched dust cloud blanketing Zilker Park after the first day. With tens of thousands of people milling about and the daytime highs between 98-107 degrees, everything was worsened by the fact that the park was already suffering from drought-like conditions. But not anymore, if Capital Sports and Entertainment (CSE) and its massive coffers have anything to say about it. Perhaps...
Every Wednesday in March, Austin Parks Foundation is teaming up with Yoga Yoga to offer free yoga classes in Republic Square Park at 5th and Guadalupe from noon to 1pm. So leave your cube, grab your mat, don your coolest Prana outfit and head over to this little urban oasis to forget, even if only temporarily, your pathetic Dilbert-like existence. These classes will be taught by certified instructors and are suitable for all ages...
Do you ever “forget” to pick up the little “presents” your dog deposits while you walk him along the Shoal Creek Greenbelt? Have you been known to lose sleep worrying that karmic justice will someday cause you to fall face-first into a steaming heap of someone else’s dog’s poop because of your own misdeeds? Well, stop worrying, grab your gardening gloves, and come redeem yourself this Saturday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. The...
Austinist shudders to imagine what life would be like in our green city without our amazing (and bountiful!) parks. After all, we've grown awfully fond of whiling away early evenings at Zilker Park, teaching our puppy how to swim in the early weekend mornings at Bull Creek, and running around the shores of Town Lake. But lately we've noticed that several of these nature havens have fallen into disrepair - whether by trail erosion,...
The Austin Parks Foundation is currently accepting applications for its Neighborhood Parks Grant Program. Each year the city distributes grants ranging from $500 - $2,500 to help fund projects such as facility improvements and community events. With the grant money, you can help improve parks in your neighborhood or even plan and build a new park. The program helps foster a greater sense of community while beautifying our natural environment. Grant applications are being...
With the 90+ degree days here and scores more to follow, we at the Austinist are beginning to gravitate towards the many watering holes in and around Austin . And with Memorial Day this weekend, so starts the “summer season,” as defined by the Austin Parks and Recreation Department. As you are probably abundantly aware, adult access to Barton Springs costs $3 a day. However, for those of you who, like us, take every...
This Thursday night offers your last chance to hang out with your neighbors and friends (and Austinist, of course) and watch a Movie in the Park. For its final cinematic event of the Spring, the Austin Parks Foundation brings you one of the funniest movies of the past year or two, “Napoleon Dynamite.” Festivities begin at 7pm in Republic Square Park (4th and Guadalupe) with a dance lesson cum dance competition to get everyone...
As summer lurks just around the corner, we suggest getting out and enjoying the still-gentle evenings of ‘spring’ with your neighbors and friends (and Austinist, of course). Thursday night, the the Austin Parks Foundation brings you one of the funniest movies of all time (yes, we love the Coen brothers, especially their earlier works), “Raising Arizona.” Festivities begin at 7pm in Republic Square Park (4th and Guadalupe) with a Huggies Toss (We are not...
On Saturday, April 23rd, the kick ass crew over at the Austin Parks Foundation will be celebrating its annual It's My Park! Day all around town. It's a day of community involvement where over 1,000 civic-minded Austinites give back to the city they love by cleaning up the parks and trails they frequent so often. These projects are all around Austin, so you can get involved and volunteer right next door. Just remember that...
