There are many great art related happenings taking place all around town this weekend, here are a few of the highlights... On Saturday evening, Domy Books is celebrating yet another opening in their gallery space. This time around, local stitcher extraordinaire, Jenny Hart, is presenting a new exhibit of drawings based on year-book photos from her small town high school. The pencil line portraits are decorated with embroidery-like embellishes, suggestive of Hart's work with her company, Sublime Stitching. Saturday's reception is free and starts at 7pm. more ›

Give Local: Guide to Holiday Art Fairs [Part Two]

The Cherrywood Art Fair returns this weekend with work from more than 80 artists. As always, the Cherrywood fair is hosted by Maplewood Elementary (38 1/2 St. at Maplewood) and admission is free! Proceeds from Cherrywood's always impressive silent auction benefit the school and arts and landscaping programs in central East Austin. Stop by on Saturday between 10am and 6pm or on Sunday from noon to 6pm to enjoy art activities, workshops from the WonderCraft, artist demos, live music, and more. Interview: Austin Art Garage Expands Exhibit Space

In 2007, Jake Bryer and Joel Ganucheau began devoting their weekends to starting a gallery for local artists and local art buyers. Six months later, they quit their day jobs and Austin Art Garage became their full time gig. Tonight, the savvy entrepreneurs are celebrating the grand opening of Austin Art Garage's new exhibit space, an expansion that nearly doubles the size of the existing gallery. The first exhibit in the new space showcases over forty pieces by Catherine Hart. Her abstract illustrations are soft and organic, reminiscent of natural forms, particularly underwater scenes. more ›

Weekend Art Roundup: Last Chance Edition

Don't miss the great art related events taking place this weekend! Here's a rundown of some of the highlights: This is the last weekend to see the Blanton's The Birth of the Cool exhibit. The museum is offering public tours of the Midcentury show (on Saturday at 2pm, and on Sunday at 2pm and 3pm) and is extending hours on Saturday until 8pm. The Blanton will also be screening the film Visual Acoustics a documentary study that follows architectural photographer Julius Shulman. Filmmaker Eric Bricker will be on hand to give a Q&A. more ›

12x12 Holiday Art Rock Show Friday

In addition to the art on display, stick around for sets by Crash Gallery, Magnet School, Taunto and Built by Snow, or pick up a brush and get to work: they're going to paint a mural during the show, and all guests are welcome to participate.
