Wear For Art Thou, Outfit?

Wear For Art Thou, Outfit?

I spend very little of my time or money in corporate America, preferring to shop mostly at independent merchants. I also try to only buy things made in countries where it wouldn’t be horrible to be a worker, like, say, France or Sweden. This means not only going to independent merchants like Toy Joy, or Karavel Shoes but looking at where the things they sell are made. It’s actually kinda exhausting. It’s the kind of retail therapy that might send you into therapy. more ›

Austinist Reviews: <em>Get Your War On</em>

Austinist Reviews: Get Your War On

[This review courtesy of new Austinist contributor Anna Hanks! -Ed.] As much as we'd like to change a few things about our first time, we regret we’ll never be able to repeat the experience. We also can’t change history, so catching the currently playing, slick incarnation of the Rude Mechanicals' Get Your War On also wasn't our first time. (We reviewed the show last January as well.) Directed by Shawn Sides, Get Your War... more ›

Austinist Reviews: Mr. Marmalade

[This review comes from new contributor Anna Hanks! -Ed.] In our culture, children are usually considered innocent until sullied by the grown-up world. Otherwise, why would we have family-friendly TV programming, G-rated movies, and continual furor about “inappropriate” books being taught in public schools? Noah Haidle’s dark little comedy, Mr. Marmalade, brilliantly twists the preconception of childhood innocence into an inspired script. We attended the final weekend of this just-closed, Capital T Theatre production at... more ›

Austinist Reviews: Wyrd Sisters

[This post comes from Anna Hanks, who'll soon be joining the Austinist staff!] We admit that when it comes to being entertained, we have the attention span of a kitten. We’re happily distracted by bright shiny costumes, jingly bells, and the occasional gilded, squeaky rubber chicken, especially when said chicken is employed to excellent comedic effect. Put a capable, young, red-headed actress charmed with crazy comedic timing into a twinkly, jingly costume, and we’re smitten.... more ›

Theatre Notes: <em>But, I Could Do That</em>

Theatre Notes: But, I Could Do That

[[Although the show ran only one weekend and closed some time ago, we're sharing new contributor Anna Hanks' notes on YTCC's latest production. -Ed.] The next time you're at a rock show, take a moment to observe the crowd, and you'll notice something interesting: most human interaction takes place on a non-verbal level, manifested in acts of flirting, fighting, and everything in between. Since that kind of voyeurism makes us giddy, we’re glad we caught... more ›

Austinist Reviews: Jesus Christ Superstar

[This post comes from Anna Hanks, who'll soon be joining the Austinist staff!] Oh how we love our brooding bad-boys, full of emotional conflicts and divided loyalties. From James Dean to Marlon Brando, we just adore our theatrical time-bombs ticking down to an eventual emotional explosion. Black outfits only accentuate their outlaw charms. Biblical bad-boy Judas Iscariot — beautifully and brilliantly portrayed by John Pointer in Zachary Scott Theatre Center’s new bilingual production of Jesus... more ›

Austinist Giveaway: White Ghost Shivers @ The Parish, Tomorrow Night!

Mixing together everything from hokum blues, gypsy swing, bass walkin' ragtime, vaudeville theatrics, and more, Austin's White Ghost Shivers are one of our cherished local institutions who simply defy categorization. Hailed as last year's "Best None The Above Bands" by the Chronicle and SXSW, the Shivers this week released their latest album, Everyone's Got Em, what their label Chicken Ranch Records describes as "a smorgasbord of Cab Calloway, circus sideshow, KISS, cabaret, Hee Haw and... more ›
