Julie Powell is a hero to food geeks everywhere, but Austin food geeks should be especially proud. Long story short: An Austin native without formal culinary training, she and her husband packed up for NYC a few years ago, and, soon after, she began the cathartic process of plowing through Julia Childs' tome, "Mastering the Art of French Cooking." A year later, she had recreated every recipe in the book, blogging the whole way through. The blog begat a book - The Julie/Julia Project - and the rest is food geek history.

An Austin staple, the Capital City Men's Chorus, is putting on their fourth annual Midnight Cabaret this weekend. The Chorus' Artistic Director, Jeffrey Jones-Ragona, explained to us the impetus for starting an annual cabaret: the Chorus wanted to sing some music that they didn't feel comfortable performing in their typical venues (churches), so they set this up a few years ago at the Vortex. He describes it as "Twisted but not dangerous; tasteless but not icky; mature but not "adult;" and mostly naughty but not nasty." In other words, good, bawdy fun.

An Austin fireman made it onto People magazine's annual Hottest Bachelors list this year, alongside celebs such as Matthew McConaughey (spotted at Friday's Round Rock Express game acting "quite the tool"), Owen Wilson and that dude who won this season's American Idol. 36-year old Reggie Tait, according to his MySpace profile, enjoys "sports, working out, playing hoops, house parties, theatre, roadtrips, live r&b/top 40/smooth jazz music, and hanging with good friends."
