Interview: Amy Cook Releases Let The Light In; Performs At Waterloo Records Today

After contributing music to a whole slew of television shows in L.A. for a good part of her career early on, Amy Cook moved to Texas in 2005. She spent time in Marfa but now calls Austin home, and our city’s musical landscape is all the more richer for it. This week, she released her latest album, the Alejandro Escovedo produced Let The Light In. Chock-full of beautiful folk-pop songs marked by personal tales and intimate lyrics, Let The Light In is bookended by two introspective, turn-things-around gems that point to a place in life we’ve all been to. Austin singer/songwriter Amy Cook has a lot of friends, a few of which will be joining her for a show at the Mohawk Wednesday. She’ll be headlining with a full band at her back and the addition of the orchestral grace of Austin’s Tosca String Quartet. Local folk rock musician and songwriter Ben Kweller will open the show and possibly trade a song or two with Cook. Both Kweller and the Tosca String Quartet contributed to the production of Cook’s upcoming album, let the Light In, which is scheduled for release in early 2010. The album also includes contributions from Patty Griffin and Alejandro Escovedo, who is also the record’s producer. more ›

Show Preview & Giveaway: Jeremy Enigk at Stubb's

Back when the term emo wasn’t either an insult or part of the marketing lexicon for tween-targeting clothing stores, there was Sunny Day Real Estate. While not the originators of the fledgling genre, they’re a reminder that melodic, sensitive punk rock hasn’t always been synonymous with poor quality. Together, the band released two records in the mid-nineties that proved to be massively influential and Diary, their debut, even spawned what we used to call an “alternative rock” hit single in the song “Seven.” What happened next was much publicized; lead singer Jeremy Enigk took time away from the band to record his debut solo release Return of the Frog Queen and to actively become a Christian, and a year later the band reformed to craft two more albums before disbanding for good. Three former members of Sunny Day Real Estate, Enigk included, formed The Fire Theft in lieu of simply reforming their old band, but that group also appears to be in hiatus. more ›
