Mass Relevance Partners with Twitter, No One Tweets About It

Mass Relevance has partnered with the indomitable internet force(light or dark?) that is Twitter. The Austin-based company has been working with Twitter for months now, but Monday marks a huge step forward in terms of the scope of their business, as their partnership will allow them to offer their services with the official stamp of approval. more ›

SXSW Film Preview: In A Better World

SXSW Film Preview: In A Better World

Suzanne Bier is no stranger to awards season. Her 2006 film After The Wedding was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. This year, she had a pretty amazing one-two punch when In A Better World won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film a few weeks before it took home the same prize at the Oscars (After The Wedding had previously lost out to The Lives Of Others). It was only the third Danish film to take home the award, following Babette's Feast and Pelle The Conqueror, both late 80's winners of the Foreign Film Oscar. more ›

Want to increase your chances of winning the annual Oscar pool in your office this year? There are a few options for you this weekend to finish seeing all the major nominees. In most cities, film buffs don't have a chance to see the Oscar Nominated short films. Luckily for us, Austin is not like most cities. more ›

Indie Picks: At The Movies This Weekend

Area theaters are still mostly in a post-Oscar nomination haze. The overcrowding of quality pictures is a blessing unless, like us, you've seen damn near everything in release that you would consider watching. There are a few notes on last week's releases: IP Man 2 moves to the Alamo Ritz for a week and you have one last shot to catch Tiny Furniture there as well for a Sunday matinee (which we highly recommend). Also, Oscar nominated Biutiful expands this week. You can still catch it at the Regal Arbor, but it's also now screening at the AMC Barton Creek and Tinseltown South. more ›

At The Movies: Indie Picks This Weekend

At The Movies: Indie Picks This Weekend

With the Academy Award nominations announced earlier this week, we can see that most of the major nominees have either already played locally or are in theaters right now. One notable return to the area is Best Documentary nominee Inside Job, which is back playing at the Cinemark Tinseltown 17 in South Austin (at least for a week). more ›

Academy Award Nominated Shorts at the Alamo

Academy Award Nominated Shorts at the Alamo

Creating a short film requires as much vision and creativity as any other variety, and rather than attempting to locate the best of the best using googling skills and illegal downloading, you can easily enjoy a pre-approved (by that certain Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) selection in the comfort of your very own Alamo Draft-home. Starting on Friday, the South Lamar location will offer screenings of both the live-action and the animated Academy Award-nominated films—five shorts per 90 minute program. more ›

Catch Oscar Nominated Shorts at the Alamo

Catch Oscar Nominated Shorts at the Alamo

With incredibly varied subject matter, there is sure to be an Oscar nominated film that you really love, that is if you don't fawn over every single one. And, come on, if you hate any of the films, the next picture will start in about 20 minutes, at the most. more ›

Literary Movie Night: Memoirs of a Geisha

Literary Movie Night: Memoirs of a Geisha

When we first heard about literary movie night, we naturally assumed that the film would be Hellraiser. We mean, how many other book-turned-films have so thoroughly and entertainingly explored sadomasochism and moral confusion? Not many, we think. more ›

Jonathan Demme to Shoot Film at Las Manitas

Jonathan Demme to Shoot Film at Las Manitas

In the first bit of Las Manitas news this year that has nothing to do with small business displacement or forgivable loans, Academy Award winning director Jonathan Demme has announced plans to shoot a new film at the embattled downtown eatery. The film (mentioned at the tail end of this Washington Post article) will apparently be a concert documentary featuring Austin roots rocker Alejandro Escovedo. No word yet on a timeframe for the shoot, but... more ›

Lake Austin Spa Ranked Among Top Boutique Resorts

Lake Austin Spa Ranked Among Top Boutique Resorts

The ultra-luxe Lake Austin Spa Resort was recently named the number two "destination spa" in Conde Nast Traveler's Spa Poll 2007. Considered the "Academy Awards of the travel industry," Conde Nast's annual reader rankings hailed the Central Texas resort for its location and setting--how could you compete with this kinda view?-- and cuisine. more ›

Austinist Interview: Payback-Straight Up Director Brian Helgeland

Austinist Interview: Payback-Straight Up Director Brian Helgeland

Like most filmmakers, Brian Helgeland got his start in movies working on low-budget genre pictures like 976-EVIL and Assassins. Before he became one of the most successful screenwriters in Hollywood, Helgeland made his directorial debut with the hard-hitting film noir Payback. Unfortunately, the film wasn't released until after Helgeland won an Oscar for L.A. Confidential, and then only in a butchered, studio-approved cut. Recently Helgeland got the chance to re-edit, and his director's cut, Payback-Straight... more ›

Watching It, Watching Me: Live Blogging the Oscars

[The following is an editorial column by contributor Alison Coffey and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Austinist staff. --The Editors] In the tradition of Neal Pollack's Salon.com Grammy's post, I've decided to take us on a live tour of this year's Academy Awards, minute by minute, hour by hour, boring acceptance speech by boring acceptance speech. Well, I hope not, but odds are, the acceptance speeches are going to be boring.... more ›

It's Awards Season Again: Golden Globe Nominations

It's Awards Season Again: Golden Globe Nominations

For what it's worth, the Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning. We like watching the Golden Globes; they are so laid-back and relaxed in comparison to the pretentious Academy Awards. Of course, they don't always choose the same winners . . . Babe won the Golden Globe for best musical/comedy the year it was nominated, after all. And while Jennifer Garner has won a Golden Globe, she has yet to win an Emmy... more ›
