Booze? Check. Will Smith? Check. Witticisms a la Jason Bateman? You bet your sweet ass. Superhero-y good times? You got it. Hancock proves that even if it rains this July 4th, there still might be some fireworks. ... [continue]
Washington, D.C. electronic duo Thievery Corporation are in town this week. Their Tuesday night show at Stubb's with Ocote Soul Sounds is already sold out, but they're sticking around another night to record an episode of KLRU's Austin City Limits. ... [continue]
I pulled into the Valero on North Lamar this weekend and the other two cars filling up were both playing Tha Carter III. One driver – a guy in his forties wearing Dockers and a button-down – waited by the pump to “Mrs. Officer”, while the other - my age in a raised black truck - blasted “A Milli.” I was listening to “La La.” It’s one thing to know that an album sold a million copies in its first week – it’s something else to hear it. And that one instance was icing on a long week of “A Milli” in West Campus and “Mr. Carter” on 6th, not to mention the long spring of “Lollipop” everywhere. There are songs you hear with this sort of inescapability – “Hustlin’”, “We Takin’ Over”, “Ridin’ Dirty.” But for an album to do it is rare, unless you’re Jay-Z or Kanye West. Or, now, Lil’ Wayne. ... [continue]
Starting tonight, the Alamo will present three non-consecutive screenings of the "Brad Neely Animation showcase", a collection of cartoon shorts from the Austin-based artist. We recently sat down with Brad to get his take on Austin, Chevy Chase, and why it’s always good to read the fine print.... [continue]

One day last year, I asked my young, hot boyfriend, Warren, what I might knit for him. I’d already made him a whimsical cock sock featuring three little airplane buttons with real moving propellers. For my next woolly gift of love, he suggested the following: a Jesus suit, chaps, handcuffs. I’m a halfway decent knitter, making up with compulsion what I lack in technical skill. While I liked the idea of the challenge of the first two choices, I knew they’d take a lot of time. As I am ever eager to bestow gifts upon my man at frequent intervals, I therefore opted for choice c) handcuffs. I didn’t have a pattern or much of an idea how to knit bondage devices. But I got out some leftover yarn from my stash and knitted on the fly. ... [continue]
You don’t see graffiti tags popping out of ornate frames very often, but Pieced Together, on exhibit at Gallery Lombardi through July 5, showcases a vibrant collision of fine art and street art. ... [continue]
This Austin band likely chose this moniker because if dinosaurs all of a sudden pulled off the greatest coups ever and rose from ocean depths to take back the planet, this would be the band they listened to as they stomped feeble humans in highly populated areas. It’s sludgy, hearty and crude. The seven-way brutal noise explosion that is this group just released their debut, Not Noiice, with a sound mixing overlapping primal vocals, music scrapes, distorted chords and pure fun that could encourage either artful interpretive dance or a straight-up slam fest.... In When Something Wonderful Ends—a blend of autobiography, American history, and analytical rant about Middle East politics—Barbara Chisholm charms from start to finish, fully engaging the audience effortlessly. That's no mean feat, considering much of the subject matter is heavy fare, weaving together a convincing argument that the war in Iraq is all about oil. We attended the show with someone we consider conservative; he found the analytical nature of the piece compelling and convincing. See it to bask in Chisholm's sparkle and to check out Barbie's groovy gear, but take away a great night of thought-provoking theatre.... [continue]

Though DJ Mel is primarily known for his legendary Rock the Casbah parties at the Parish, he's been bringing a little debauchery to the Beauty Bar with his SWOLL parties. SWOLL sets are focused on the higher end of the BPM range, mixing Miami Bass, Baltimore club and "anything fast". Last weekend's event including DJ Klever, Cosmo Baker looks like it was a really good time. ... [continue]

Austinist Indieroke: The Second Chapter begins next Sunday the 25th at The Mohawk’s sweet outdoor deck next to their brilliantly renovated Green Room. Fret not though because all the classic tunes you’ve grown to love in our karaoke collection are still available for you to enhance (or slaughter) with your personal renditions. But we are confident that you will love our new ideas and incentives. First off, there is an Austinist Indieroke MySpace page now. Get in there and add us as a friend -- photographs of all our contest nominees and winners shall be archived there in our “Hall Of Mirrors” because “even the greatest stars find their face in the looking glass / even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass.”... imageafterWhile some Austinites eagerly await the impending arrival of a 3G iPhone, others are merely trying to get online using whatever technology they can find -- take, for example, the kind-hearted students at McCallum High School who are trying to assemble refurbished computers for their classmates. These 'part time students, part time environmentalists' are holding a community-wide electronics recycling drive at the school this Saturday, May 17th. They'll be accepting all electronics, including computers, televisions,... [continue]
Not long after I hooked up with Warren, my young hot boyfriend, he introduced me to the lovely, talented Audrey Maker. Audrey puts together burlesque shows around town. Which is how I wound up, last fall, as a volunteer at the Texas Burlesque Fest, a sold-out, over the topless, two-night celebration of boobs. I got to work the Undressing Room, hanging out with beautiful women (and some men) in various states of undress, asking them if they needed anything. Warren had the more exciting job of Panty Catcher. Outfitted in a Super Hero costume enhanced with a big, bright pink, crocheted cock, he served a function similar to that of the ball boys and girls at Wimbledon. Each time an act finished, Warren dashed onstage to retrieve thongs, gloves, corsets, fishnets, etc. to clear the way for the next act.... [continue]
NYC Cops acquitted in shooting death of bridegroom Sean Bell. Internet sales tax coming to New York. Texas rejects creationist science degree. China offers to meet with Dalai Lama envoys. Tax rebates to start arriving Monday. Al-Sadr may restart full-scale fight against US in Iraq. YEAH, TAKE IT, YOU TAKE IT!... [continue]
The Mohawk on Friday is going to be absolutely busting out with music, as one of their patently awesome two-stages-for-one-ticket deals hits the scene. Getting the big print and final time slot on the two stages are Elf Power and Belaire, but they're just small pieces of what looks to be a good long night of song. So we'll break this down all methodical-like so you won't have to worry about missing anything, and you'll finally learn the wonderfulness that is six live (and actually quite good!) bands for less than an Alexander Hamilton. ... Editor's note: In hopes of getting a little more information on how the candidates in the May 10 Austin City Council election may respond to issues facing Austin, we sent out a few questions. Up next is Robin Cravey, who is running for Place 4 against Jennifer Gale, Cid Galindo, Laura Morrison, Sam Osemene and Ken Vasseau. See all his responses after the jump.... [continue]
