One of the many crazy-go-nuts fans at Recover's reunion show headlining Everyone Knows Everyone 5. This guy is doing a backflip into the crowd. No idea how he didn't break his neck.... [continue]
Raise your hand if you knew what a whirling dervish actually is. Yeah, we didn't either. But now we do, thanks to a performance by the Whirling Dervishes of Rumi last night at the Riverbend Center. It's hard to put into words how mesmerizing the performance — literally just coordinated, extended spinning — is in person. There's some video on their site that gives a clue, but still doesn't do it justice. If you... [continue]
Ah, SXSW. One minute you're walking down Sixth to catch a bus, the next you're watching Wayne Coyne, lead singer of the Flaming Lips, interview some weirdo for a bit on The Tonight Show. Don't worry, this video won't bring the FCC calling. Those are some kind of gag underwear that have a plastic genatalia-esque accessory on the outside. Coyne and crew were first spotted wandering down the street until this producer (we assume),...... [continue]
What is this SXSW business? Don't y'all know there's a presidential campaign in full swing? And not at all excessively early, either. Edwards' only semi-public appearance in town was for a taping of Texas Monthly Talks. The interview airs next Thursday. Check your local schedule.... [continue]
Might be the last night to enjoy the ice-covered trees. Although, we've probably all "enjoyed" enough ice for two or three winters at this point.... [continue]

Unfortunately, there is a second piece of bad news today: the University of Texas community is mourning the loss of long-time philosophy professor Robert Solomon. Solomon died Jan. 2 in an airport in Switzerland. The Statesman reports that he died suddenly, in the middle of changing planes, from pulmonary hypertension, likely the result of a lifelong congenital heart defect. Solomon taught the only two philosophy classes I ever took at UT, as part of a...... [continue]

All images in this post by special guest contributor Megan Griffiths This is the second post highlighting the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The first is here, but we'll ask again: if you know of good local resources to help Katrina and Rita evacuees, or if you know of any artists who were forced from their homes and into Austin, please let us know. In this installment, we highlight the work of Megan...... [continue]
All images in this post by special guest contributor Brandon Edwards More than a year later, the official ceremonies and memorials for the anniversaries of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have come and gone. The best, in concept, had to be the cattle drive to commemorate Rita, which had the added bonus of drawing attention to the devestation of the Southwest Louisiana's cattle industry (an ongoing catastrophe, as the saltwater that cows and trees drank...... We met this family on the steps of the capitol yesterday. All of these red figures were visible from across the street, and a natural draw to a photographer who had finally been released from his office building. Turns out each one commemorates a woman who was killed by someone she was close to, usually a husband or boyfriend. Inside each Texas silhouette is a brief rundown of the crime that took her life.... Has it already been that long? Ah well, for the record, for posterity, for history, here are a few last images. Y'all apparently didn't have much interest in our Flickr pool before, but it's still there if you'd like to contribute. Many thanks again to our wonderful staff photographers, Eric Uhlir, Emily Kinsolving, and Wylie Maercklein (and K.E.B., too, if we can ever get her to get photos online). Much more below the Expand-o-Tron....... [continue]
