Austin may soon cut a policy that gives away a scarce resource to the lucky few: downtown street parking, which is free to those lucky enough to find a spot after 5:30 pm and on the weekends. In connection with the plan to install a new type of parking meter, free times may be cut, perhaps to after 8:30 pm and on Sundays. People park then too, but charging at night might incur the wrath of angry boozehounds and charging on Sundays might incur the wrath of God (or at least the wrath of downtown churches).... The current election ballot in Austin includes a proposition for an amendment to the city charter to "prohibit the City from providing financial incentives ... for projects that include one or more retail uses." The proposition is the result of a signature drive by Stop Domain Subsidies.... [continue]

Local NBC affiliate KXAN announced today that it may be taken off of Time Warner Cable's broadcast service in early October if current contract re-negotiations don't work out. What Happened to the Good Flow? on September 8, 2008

Cjcj/stock.xchngWe've heard from several readers today that Good Flow Juice Co, Austin's fresh juice makers, may have encountered some FDA problems resulting in their shutdown—temporary or otherwise. The issue, from what we can gather, is that their juices hadn't been pasteurized (the process of heating up a liquid to kill off bacteria and molds), a standard industry procedure that prevents the outbreak of nasty things like E. coli. Given a deadline by the FDA, it... [continue]

Mediabistro's AgencySpy broke news this afternoon that an as-of-yet-unnamed creative director at Austin's own GSD&M was fired last Friday after pulling a not-so-bright stunt. It seems that this CD created a GMail address in the name of the Executive Creative Director, and then went on to send out emails to other creative department employees about salary and other information pertinent to their department -- all under the ECD's name, mind you.... This Tuesday, the folks at the Alamo Drafthouse are hosting an extremely rare 35mm screening of Enzo Castellari's original Inglorious Bastards, currently being remade by Quentin Tarantino. By all accounts, is utterly badass (Fred Williamson is in it... isn't that enough for you?). The screening is FREE, and although RSVP priority was given to Fantastic Fest badgeholders, there will be some tickets available at the door. Come one, come all.... [continue]

Hit And Run Karma Sucks on July 1, 2008

Back in late March, Carrie Miller was riding home on Guadalupe when she was struck by a hit-and-run driver and thrown from her bike. The driver, whose passenger side mirror struck Miller, may not have stopped, but he left her with a key piece of evidence -- evidence that would lead Miller back to her own apartment building.... This morning, Austin City Limits Festival organizers released the schedule for 2008. The lineup, featuring acts like Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Spiritualized, Foo Fighters, Beck and Manu Chao, is notable this year thanks to its extremely strong middle section (the "heat of the day" section, as we like to call it) and offers acts like MGMT, Patty Griffin, Hot Chip and Duffy, as well as two quip-worthy local acts, Okkervil River and White Denim. ... Foxboro Hot Tubs, the nom de plume of the latest not-so-super-secret Green Day side project, headline Emo's inside stage tonight. Conjuring up the frantic protopunk energy of The Kinks, MC5 and The Stooges, Green Day members Billie Joe, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool will be joined by friends Jason Freese, Kevin Preston and Jason White as Foxboro Hot Tubs. But the jangly 60's garage-pop group's sound is still unmistakably Green Day; Billie Joe's signature voice and song writing style gives it away. ... [continue]
