Drink: Alamo Drafthouse Launches Movie-Inspired Wine Line

alamo_header_drafthouse__full.jpg After conquering its quest to deliver the ultimate full service movie going experience, Alamo Drafthouse is venturing into unchartered territory with a recently announced signature line of wines.

These not just your basic, average, everyday, ordinary, run-of-the-mill, ho-hum wines, however. In developing the wines, Alamo Drafthouse derived inspiration from the modern day fairy tale The Princess Bride. The aptly named Battle of Wits line of wines includes one white and one red varietal in honor of the movie’s epic wine-filled showdown.

The As You Wish white is a refreshing, medium bodied California blend with tropical fruit aromas and a well balanced citrus finish. It’s a bright, tart wine, similar to a Rhone blend and possibly inspired by Princess Buttercup herself.

Because one should never join a Sicilian in a Battle of Wits, Drafthouse safely chose grapes from California in creating its iocane powder-free red varietal. The Inconceivable Cab is a traditional medium-bodied California Cabernet with rich fruit and firm tannins.

In celebration of the wine launch and twue wuv (true love), Alamo Drafthouse is hosting a five course Valentine’s Day feast reflecting the movie’s mayhem, romance, and adventure.

Beginning on Tuesday, February 14, Alamo Drafthouse will offer these two new varietals at its theatres with plans for online sales in the future. Each wine will be priced at $7/glass and $28/bottle and available only through the end of 2012.

Austin is currently home to four Alamo Drafthouse theatres with a fifth location on Slaughter Lane to open this spring. Founded locally in 1997, Alamo Drafthouse now includes a growing number of company-owned and franchise locations in Texas and across the country. And, who knows, with recent talk of a Big Apple expansion, perhaps we’ll see a City Slickers line of wines next year!
