Austin’s musical landscape never gets stagnant. There’s always evolution, constant change going on. One of the most recent developments is in the creation of what’s shaping up to resemble a mini-Red River on East Riverside. Emo’s East opened in the area last year, and now Beauty Bar’s new brand expansion The Beauty Ballroom has landed in the hood. The Beauty Ballroom is having their Grand Opening weekend Friday and Saturday, and the new venue setting its sights on larger touring acts while aiming to stay true to the Beauty Bar vibe.
Friday night will feed the flames of your romance with hip electro rapper, MC and vocalist Theophilus London, whose diverse palette has found him reworking countless blogosphere hits and dropping the world’s only Morrissey-inspired hip hop mixtape. A polyglot of the contemporary scene, London has a cocky and free ranging catalog: at times electro R&B in the vein or Frank Ocean or the trend-savvy rapperKid Cudi , who also chases the pulse with London's stylish tenacity. He will be joined by Atlanta DJ Treasure Fingers with L.A.X., Vegas Banger, and Rickey Jean Francois supporting.
Saturday night promises a kickoff party like no other with a special celebration of the music of Elvis and Bowie. This Ambitious Orchestra, a symphonic rock band with horns, violins and much more, along with Lady Circus and Bro Circus will be setting the stage while a cast of some of Austin’s most beloved singers provide the vocals. The list of those joining up includes Daniel Johnston, Alex Maas (Black Angels), Jason Reece (Trail of Dead), Mike Wiebe (Riverboat Gamblers), Yvonne Lambert (Octopus Project) and more.
And, if you dig the experience and staying out of downtown to get your music fix, check out this year’s Psych Fest April 27-29th as the event takes over both Emo’s East and The Beauty Ballroom.
