Hot Dogs, Cold Beer, and...Christmas? [Show Preview]

Hot dogs and cold beer aren’t necessarily synonymous with the holiday season, but why not start a new tradition? Recently, Frank has been making live music a weekly tradition of its own, and the dog/beer joint is quickly establishing itself as one of the best venues to grab dinner and a show. Tonight is no different: come dressed in your best red and white attire for an evening showcasing a trio of acts who are poised for a big splash in 2012.

Literature headlines the night with its joyful power-pop theatrics. Featuring Moth!Fight!’s Kevin Attics on guitar, the group offers a solid foundation for lead singer Nathaniel Cardaci’s proto-punk sneer. They’ve got a handful of quick-and-simple releases to their name (including this month’s timely “Arab Spring” single) and an attitude that screams for bigger things to come.

Horse + Donkey’s lead singer Jaime Zuverza takes the stage as the head of Hidden Ritual. While he dabbled in sparse surf-pop in his previous band, Zuverza dials up the psych influences with Hidden Ritual, building their songs slowly and methodically. It’s easy to hear why Bill Callahan tapped them as his opening act on this past summer’s tour through the Midwest. Bitter Birds open up the evening with its own brand of dark pop, though the moodiness is tempered by Singer Mayberry’s sugary voice. They’re set to release their debut 7” in early 2012, keeping them in step with the evening’s up-and-comers.
