It's A Punk Rock Christmas/Birthday Bash! [Show Preview]

Given how nebulous the music world has become, it’s no wonder Matador Records honcho Gerard Cosloy attempted to provide a snapshot of the Red River scene before it got gobbled up by high-rises and noise ordinances. 2010 saw the release of Casual Victim Pile, a mixtape of notable noisy acts that practically live in those downtown bars. Besides inspiring a sequel, the CVP alums continue to make waves, and they’re celebrating Sunday night at Beerland with a show for Mr. Cosloy himself—packaged together as a hybrid Christmas/birthday bash for the label head, and it’s also a nice gift for the rest of us.

Headlining the evening are the Flesh Lights, who just put out their debut album this past fall. Muscle Pop is a perfect moniker: continuing in the tradition of a few years’ worth of 7-inches, the Flesh Lights deliver brawny punk that nevertheless leaves plenty of room for pop hooks.

Meanwhile, fiery country-punk John Wesley Coleman has wrapped up a new album with Morgan Coy (co-founder of Coleman’s label, Monofonus Press) titled Nightmare On Silly Street. Whether it’s through music, stand-up comedy, or writing, Coleman has developed into Austin’s jack-of-all-trades, and now you can live vicariously through him with this Atari-style videogame. Simple Circuit provides plodding garage punk, and the Dead Space open the night with gloomy post punk that sounds transplanted from across the pond.
