Jasmyne Graybill creates mold, like the kind that appears on a month-old café au lait or blueberry pie. Though rather than generating a science-fiction fungi apocalypse, Graybill chooses to draw attention to the beauty of organisms grafted onto host objects. Her upcoming exhibition, opening Saturday at Women & Their Work, focuses on nature adapting to the home.

In this exhibition, the host objects are items often found in kitchen cupboards. Inspired by her great-grandmother’s fine china, barnacles from the Gulf Coast, and lichen found in the Hill Country, Graybill’s exhibition features polymer clay polyps and mold clusters on vintage and antique plates, teacups, tins, and other household items. Some pieces consist of fictional, vibrant blooms, but others require a second look in order to notice the camouflaged, miniscule polyps attached to the floral design of an old plate. The colorful, sculpted organisms hint at nature’s survival long after humankind’s demise. As Graybill stated, “Give nature an inch, and she takes things back.”

Jasmyne Graybill currently lives in San Antonio and holds a BFA from the University of North Texas and an MFA from the University of Texas - San Antonio. Ironically, she's allergic to mold. Her husband, Buster Graybill, also has an exhibition opening at AMOA - arthouse - Laguna Gloria on Sunday, November 20.

November 19th is also tax-free day at Women & Their Work’s gift shop.
