Texas County Judge Involved in Child-Abuse Video Controversy

Last week, Texas resident Hillary Adams posted a distressing video of her father, Aransas County family court judge William Adams, beating her with a belt. According to Hillary Adams, who has cerebral palsy, she was 16 at the time and was being punished for illegally downloading music from the Internet.

She wrote on Youtube:

Aransas County Court-At-Law Judge William Adams took a belt to his own teenage daughter as punishment for using the internet to acquire music and games that were unavailable for legal purchase at the time. She has had ataxic cerebral palsy from birth that led her to a passion for technology, which was strictly forbidden by her father's backwards views. The judge's wife was emotionally abused herself and was severely manipulated into assisting the beating and should not be blamed for any content in this video. The judge's wife has since left the marriage due to the abuse, which continues to this day, and has sincerely apologized and repented for her part and for allowing such a thing, long before this video was even revealed to exist. Judge William Adams is not fit to be anywhere near the law system if he can't even exercise fit judgement as a parent himself. Do not allow this man to ever be re-elected again. His "judgement" is a giant farce. Signed, Hillary Adams, his daughter.

The video went viral after being posted on Reddit. Judge Adams, asked for comment, said, "it looks worse than it is" and also said, "In my mind, I haven't done anything wrong other than discipline my child after she was caught stealing." He has since been removed from his job temporarily.

On the Today Show this morning, Hillary Adams explained, "I waited seven years because back then I was still a minor and living under his roof and releasing it then, I don’t know what would’ve happened to me and my mother and my little sister. So waiting until today, seven years later, was about me being able to pull away and distance myself from the consequences. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back. It wasn’t any huge happening. I told him I had the video, and he didn’t seem to think anything of it and basically dared me to post it.’’

Her mother Hallie, seen in the video slapping her daughter with the belt, said, "As a parent, I feel like a failure," and says she was brainwashed into helping her ex-husband punish Hillary, "I lived in an environment of dysfunction, and it steadily got worse.I was completely brainwashed and controlled. I did every single thing that he did. When I leave the room, he’s telling me what to say, what to do." Hillary Adams said of her mother, "We’re very close now, and when I showed her the video, she started crying and hasn’t stopped apologizing. I forgive her because she knows everything that happened."

After receiving a multitude of calls, emails and faxes in reaction to the video, the Texas State Commission on Judicial Conduct released a statement today that they are looking into the incident. Rockport Police have also opened an investigation.

The simple fact is this: Spanking your child with a belt is a sexual act alone and in no way discipline. Hear me out before you disreagard my opinion. Men and women all over the world enjoy spanking and being spanked in their marrige beds, and the simple fact is belts are sold at sex toy stores all over the country. There is never an excuse for using something on your childs body that could be bought at a sex store. Yes you can buy a belt at walmart, but you can also buy condoms at walmart, is it ok to use those with your kids? Spanking is only meant to be used sparingly to young children, only with your hand, and only ever 3 times. NEVER more then 3 quick pops. Spanking is only to be used to shock the child into stopping the bad behavior and getting their attention. At that point you stop and use another form of punishment like grounding. So here's the bottom line: if husbands and wives everywhere are doing it in bed at night as foreplay than it should never be used on a child by a parent.

My understanding is that the statute of limitations has expired for charges to be brought against this judge. I don't think there should be limitations on crimes like this.

We occasionally hear from those who fight to uphold this practice for those under the age of 18 (even to the blaming of the social maladies of the day on a supposed "lack" of it), but we rarely, if ever, find advocates for the return of corporal punishment to the general adult community, college campuses, inmate population, or military. Why is that?

Ask ten unyielding proponents of child/adolescent/teenage-only "spanking" which of these is the "right" way to do it, and which are offensive, indecent, obscene, or abusive, and you will get ten different answers:

I have no respect for a woman who stands by while ANYONE beats her child. Brainwashed my ass. She probably would have let him rape her children if he put food on the table and provided her with a lifestyle of some sort. She's worthless. The father needs to have ONLY supervised visitation with his other child, if any visitation is granted at all.
