Golden Bear, The Preservation, Girl In A Coma, and More?! [Show Previews]
If it feels like a glut of local-ish bands are storming the clubs this Halloween weekend, that's because they are. A cross-section of sorta spooky to downright cuddly groups are playing, giving your recess from the working week more than its share of rock options.
Tonight, you can catch The Preservation as they host a cd release show at Swan Dive with Wiretree and Leatherbag. An outgrowth of projects including The Weary Boys and many more, the band pushes in the direction of upbeat and classic rock/pop with hooks and shared vocals a-plenty. For more, see KUT's "Song of the Day," where their track "Modern Dance" is featured.
More ghoulish or dark thoughts guiding you tonight? San Antonio's Girl In A Coma are celebrating the coming release (November 1st) of their newest album Exits and all the Rest, which, like the rest of their full-lengths, is being released by Joan Jett's Blackheart records. Three previous albums have not dulled the band's bitter stomp, from quiet-loud album opener "Adjust" to distorted and weird closer "Mother's Lullaby." The Beat Dolls and Agent Ribbons open.
On Saturday night, for just a scant five bucks, you can catch Golden Bear as they officially throw the release party for Alive, their third and most realized release yet. Full of the anthemic, positive power pop Austin has come to expect from the rocking outfit, Alive also has its share of curveballs, from the subtle but ultimately transcendent "The Ruins" to the piano-driven and sweet/sour ruminations of "Myths." But hear for yourself - the first twenty-five in get a copy of the album for free, and of course the band will be exercising these jams live, after openers The Great Nostalgic, Shivery Shakes and Haun's Mill do their thing(s). Also, a costume contest and free pizza are promised, which makes this a pretty unbeatable bill.
