Gorch Fock Reunion Benefit for Maria Mabra [Show Preview]

It's safe to say that Gorch Fock is the only Austin band named after a 1930s German war ship, but after a string of eclectic noise-rock releases from 2002-06, the band has been at bay (yes!). Which is a shame, because for a while, they were the standard bearers for Central Texas's tradition of psychedelic avant-garde weirdness that traces back to the Butthole Surfers. The seven-piece outfit blended a blitzkrieg of guitars and bass with a two drummer attack and blasting trombone to rightfully garner a reputation as one of the loudest and most oddball bands on Red River.

But, for one night at least, the psych rock navigators will reemerge for a concert at Ruta Maya benefiting Maria Mabra, the drummer and vocalist for Corinne Rose. The proceeds from the show and an accompanying silent auction will aid Mabra's fight to overcome breast cancer, and who among us doesn't like rocking out for a good cause? Bands lending support to the cause include psych power trio Insect Sex Act, a side project of Scratch Acid's Brett Bradford, and ex-Butthole Surfer bassist Jeff Pinkus's latest project, the honky-tonk absurdist Pure Luck. Migas will bring their grunge-influence "guitarmony" sound for a parking lot set, and Power Squid and MadmimadaM will get things started.
