After a several month live show hiatus, Ola Podrida is back this Saturday at Frank, promising to perform at least five new tracks from an upcoming full-length album. With a tentative release date not scheduled until June 2012 for this third Ola Podrida album, it will have been almost three years from their last release, 2009's Belly of the Lion. David Wingo, mastermind of OP, hasn't been slacking off, though; Friday night is the Austin premiere of the film Take Shelter, directed by Austin's Jeff Nichols and scored by Wingo. The haunting music composition fits perfectly with the themes of paranoia and doubt in the psychological film. Listen to a preview of the tracks here.
Drawing comparisons to Band of Horses with a dash of Americana, Ola Podrida captured an indie alt-country/folk feel almost perfectly on 2009's Belly Of The Lion - additionally impressive since Wingo sang and played every part except for the drums on four of the tracks, and recorded it in his own apartment. It's anyone's guess what direction these new songs will take though, as Wingo's compositional and instrumental skills reach new heights.
Leading up to Ola Podrida's midnight set on Saturday are fellow local acts ((sounder)) and Girling. ((sounder)), led by Mike Aho, mixes lo-fi with folk, and recently released a double-single on blue 180g vinyl. At the bargain price of $6, it's a show not to be missed.
