Emo's East Opens With the Butthole Surfers

We initially reported that the new Emo's owned venue that replaced the Backroom on Riverside was speculated to open up in July or August, and it turns out we didn't have to wait too much longer than those first projections. Emo's East will have a "preview" opening on September 11th (of all days) with The Butthole Surfers. The press release explains that owner Frank Hendrix wanted to give the club a sample run before it opens for good - “We have got to see how the club will work in a show environment and not just on paper,” said Hendrix. “That way, any adjustments can be made before they are permanently in the club.”

More about the venue: "Emo’s East will feature a 1700 capacity room with a 40-foot vaulted ceiling, complimented by a 35-foot wide stage pumping glorious sound out of a D&B Q-Line main array sound system and full production lighting system to go with it."

The Butthole Surfers, of course, are Austin-area legends with a reputation that largely precedes them. Their last album was Weird Revolution, out a decade ago. Also performing: 400 Blows, Bodytronix. Tickets here.

  • It's about time something happened with the Backroom, it's been... what 4-5 years since it closed?

  • 400 Blows... aptly named.

  • Test driving a venue with a Butthole Surfers concert is like buying a new car, draining the oil, and not pulling the pedal off the floor until the rings are blown.  This should be good.  The past years' Halloween shows have been awesome.

  • Thanks a lot for sharing this one to us.
