What if Basquiat decided to use urban infrastructure to teach mathematics instead of using it to simply scrawl cryptic lines of poetry? However inadvertent the connection might be, this is the sort of feel conjured up by Khabele mathematics instructor Eric Mann on his blog, Footpath Math. His is a world where mathematics is beautiful and inspiring... something you take to the streets, not something to be left in a stuffy classroom for students to doze off to after lunch.
With cuts in education funding taking much of our public educational system out at the knee, Mann's guerilla approach to teaching a core subject just might be the remedy needed to help engage students struggling to keep up.
