Fresh off a west coast jaunt opening for ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead, local trio Follow That Bird step on up to Antone's to headline a pretty enticing bill of indie rock tonight. What more can you say about this band? Following the inclusion of their terrific song "The Ghosts That Wake You" on Matador's Casual Victim Pile - after which Gerard Cosloy called them "one of the best bands in the country" - Follow That Bird have ascended like helium through the Austin scene with their blistering sound, combining the angular riffs of art punk with the animalistic energy of garage rock and the sheer volume good ol' fashioned indie rock.
Girls singing, shredding and pounding on drums will garner any band its fair share of Riot Grrrl comparisons, but Follow That Bird's sound is as much mid-'90s Matador or early Led Zeppelin as it is Sleater-Kinney. Plus, singer and guitarist Lauren Green can really belt it (not that Carrie Brownstein can't, mind you). The band recently released two-track 7", Wooden Bones, that has us psyched for their debut LP, which will drop later this year (hopefully). The 7", which you can listen to at their bandcamp, features all the ingredients we've come to love in the band: Green's soulful vocals and waves of melodically thrashing guitar, Tiffanie Lanmon's relentlessly energetic drumming, and Paul Brinkley's heavy-lifting, dirty bass lines. Seriously, don't miss it.
Fort Worth post-punk act The Burning Hotels will open. The band's debut full-length was mixed by Mark Needham, who did the same for The Killers and Bloc Party, and the young four-piece has toured with the likes of The Horrors, Ghostland Observatory and The Appleseed Cast.
Also playing are One Hundred Flowers, who will bring their unconventional, Elephant 6-esque pop harmonies to the stage, and local blues rock group The Soul Pilots, whose songs have a classic '80s Austin appeal.
