Before everyone was equipped with camera phones--readily snapping Hipstamatic and Instagrams to share with the world, Ricky Powell made his mark in street photography back in 1985 with an old fashioned Instamatic camera. During the early days of NYC hip hop, Powell was following around the pioneers of the genre, turning out candid shots behind the scenes at elite clubs and on urban streets.
Tonight, and for one night only, Powell will appear along with his World Famous Slide Show at Alamo Ritz. Rest assured, this won't be anything like that time your folks sat you down with the family photo album to tell them about how things were in their day. Powell brings with him of an unconventional storytelling meets stand-up act that is sure to demonstrate the same charismatic wit that won him a spot on the Raising Hell Tour bus with The Beastie Boys and Run-DMC and led to his recognition as the "the fourth Beastie Boy" and Def Jam's unofficial house photographer. Powell's straight talk, raw chronicling, and understanding of the scene granted him access to underground celebrity circles in New York City as a newcomer in the burgeoning hip hop world as well as invitations to subsequent Beastie Boys tours - License to Ill in ‘87, Together Forever, Check Your Head in ‘92, and Lollapalooza ‘94.
His work has been featured in various publications, including The New York Times, Newsweek, VIBE, Rolling Stone, and The Beastie Boys' own Grand Royal Magazine. Tonight's show promises to unveil uncensored stories while possibly filing another one away for the books.
