Our sometimes-sister city San Antonio often gets the short end of the stick when it comes to music coverage, but it’s recently shown signs of life. Backbeat Magazine was founded to rectify this oversight, highlighting an emerging scene that’s making a stand in the Alamo City, a la William B. Travis et al. Now, Backbeat’s spreading their reach up I-35 with an ATX office that’s making a big summer splash this weekend with a massive block party on 7th Street.

In conjunction with Red River Noise, Backbeat ATX serves to cast an eye on local talent with interviews, featured stories, and album reviews, all housed in a glossy magazine. Local artists also get their day in the sun, and the whole endeavor looks to profile up-and-comers on a constant basis.

They already know the way into an Austinite’s heart: massive music festival. The Block Party goes down at Beauty Bar, the Side Bar, and on Red 7’s two stages starting on Saturday afternoon before winding up early Sunday morning. Food and refreshments are provided by Side Bar and Rita’s Water Ice, and there’s even a dunking booth where you can dunk the band of your choice. All proceeds from the booth go to Band Aid School of Music.

And of course, there’s live music—lots of it, featuring a number of bands that have graced these digital pages like L.A.X., One Hundred Flowers, Megafauna, and the Boxing Lesson, plus a ton of up-and-comers worthy of your attention. Check out the schedule below, and you can RSVP here.
