Drinks: Flix Brews Up North, While Circle Bocks Out

Reel Crafty: Yesterday, Round Rock's Sky Ridge Plaza saw the debut of Flix Brewhouse, a venue which (much like Violet Crown) takes the successful Alamo Drafthouse "brew-n-view" model and spins it in a slightly different direction. The niche here is that the cinema is also a working microbrewery - to begin, they'll feature a whopping 42 draft beers, then will add in their own beers from former Independence head brewer Justin Rizza beginning sometime in August. Rizza was the brewer behind the bottled version of Independence's Stash IPA along with their Saison and Rood offerings. There will also be a full-service kitchen, which will soft launch in early July. The cinema itself has six screens, which are kitted out with hi-def digital projection, high back chairs, and moveable table tops for your grub. One other interesting thing: since it is a microbrewery, they'll leave the lounge bar open to the public daily - if you'd just like to stop in for food or beer, there's no requirement to purchase a ticket. Flix is located at IH-35 and Hester's Crossing (Exit 251) in Round Rock.

Bock Launch: On Saturday, July 9th, North Austin's new Circle Brewing Company will host an open house to launch their fourth beer. The new brew, named Epic, is a hoppy bock - no word on whether this is a seasonal or a full-time lineup addition. Free samples will be available at the event, while a $10 pint glass purchase will allow you to sample a larger volume of beer. The Peached Tortilla will also be onsite to help you soak up your pint with some comfort food. The event runs from 4-7pm at 2340 West Braker Lane. Find out more at the event's Facebook page here.

Looks like the Galaxy chain of theaters is getting in on the 'food & beer' model and is opening a new gigaplex with in-theater food service complete with cocktails and beer. Will probably do well in the location they've sited it. Probably better than the GoldClass cinema is doing in the Domain where they recently reduced ticket prices.

The Highland Galaxy is my favorite place to see mainstream movies on opening weekends. Never a line to get in. Plenty of seats available. No online surcharge for tickets.

The author didn't claim the "brew-n-view" model is an Alamo creation or compare the film selection at Flix to that at Violet Crown. You got to spew some bitterness though, so good on ya

Please don't attribute theĀ "brew-n-view" model as if it were an Alamo Drafthouse original creation. The modest owners of the Drafthouse would be embarrassed to take credit for inventing the concept of serving beer and food in a theater. Chains had been doing it in Portland, OR for years before the Colorado street theater opened.

I hope the best for this theater in Round Rock, but it doesn't look like the comparison to the Violet Crown is warranted. Whereas the Violet Crown programs awesome independent films exclusively, Round Rock's new Brewpup theater is screening the same garbage movies as the Alamo Drafthouse and the nearby Tinsletown: Bad Teacher, Transformers, and Larry Crown. All that's going on here is a theater with an adult concessions stand similar to that described by Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction (1994) as he relates his recent Amsterdam trip to Jules.
