Many a band these days attempts to fund an album release through the means of Kickstarter, an online platform that aids in acquiring the dollars needed for any number of creative projects. Only the truly good ones tend to meet their funding needs, however, and Shells is one of those lucky few. After raising more than $2200 on Kickstarter, Shells had their debut album Dad Rock Confuser professionally mastered and pressed. Recorded in November 2010 at Shine Studios here in Austin, the album contains songs such as "Mammal Jam" and "Monotown" that span genres from indie garage rock to alt-country/folk styles. You can listen to a preview of the album on Soundcloud here.
Shells also claims the honor of being named one of the Austin Chronicle's top 10 bands to watch in 2011. The trio formed in the summer of 2009 and is comprised of singer/guitarist Ryan Lentell, bassist Michael Caviness and Jack Smith on the drums. Celebrating the release of their debut album at Emo's on Thursday, June 23, this is your chance to see Shells before they head out of town for their first east coast tour.
Opening the night are three Texan bands, Roky Moon and BOLT! from Houston, and The Mole People and Boonesboro, both from Austin. This eclectic mix of musical types will hit the spot for varying fans: Boonesboro's sunny sweet pop will brighten up even the darkest day and The Mole People will rock you with psychedelic soul-punk, while Roky Moon and BOLT! have been taking on Houston for the last year with their own blend of classic rock 'n roll sound. More information is available on the Facebook invite here.
