Summer Temperatures Could Outdo 2009

With temperatures already hitting the triple digits, it's proving to be a scorcher of a...spring?

Even though summer doesn't officially start for another two weeks, Austin has already seen record-high heats. This is leading some meteorologists to believe that the summer of 2011 may rival 2009, when Central Texas missed the all-time heat record by just one day.

Since Austin had its first 100 degree day on May 25, it is in good position to hit that mark, and maybe pass it. But while temperatures are soaring, attention is shifting to the water supply.

Experts are blaming this year's weather on La NiƱa, a weather phenomenon that makes for higher winter temperatures and less rain. The dry ground makes for higher summer temperatures when summer hits.

With only 6 inches of rainfall this year, Austin is well below the average. The city is currently under Stage 1 water restrictions, which limit lawn waterings to twice weekly. If the drought continues, the city may raise restrictions to Stage 2, which include limits on vehicle washing and other usage.

Water levels are still above their 2009 numbers, but there are still months of heat in store. For more drought information, check here.

And in the meantime, practice your rain dance.
