John Wesley Coleman at Spiderhouse Ballroom [Show Preview]

If there’s a leader in our city’s chaotic Red River garage-punk scene, John Wesley Coleman would be your man. When he’s not fronting the Golden Boys, Coleman records and plays as a solo act, writes poetry and books, paints, does stand-up, and generally revels in the seedy side of society. He’s a high-wire powder keg of entertainment, and the perfect ambassador to this city’s darker cultural underbelly. You can catch him tonight at the Spiderhouse Ballroom (formerly U.S. Art Authority) as part of their weekly "Top of the Pops" concert series.

Coleman’s myriad endeavors strike at the heart of his junkyard aesthetic. He moves from one idea to the next, constantly writing that next best song or finding that new shade of color. With the Golden Boys, it’s all about being the best psychedelic-country-punk bar band in the city limits, and Coleman achieves that through work ethic alone. Rallying around their frontman with barbed-wire riffs and some Texas bravado, the band recently played thirty shows on a three-week tour.

In his downtime, Coleman works as a solo artist, releasing Bad Lady Goes To Jail last October. It’s a peak into his cracked worldview, detailing stories of pimps, prostitutes, cowboys, drugs, and Christians who drive like shit. And it’s a hell of a ride—primitively recorded, the gutter punk fervor dripping off in buckets. Coleman is a shark of man: he has to keep moving to stay alive, and you best keep up.
