Austin audiences likely need no introduction to the Melvins. The West Coast institution (born in Olympia, Washington, bred in San Francisco, California) has long been a River City favorite. The pioneering avant-grunge act has spread its eardrum-smashing gospel since the mid-80s, reaching its 25th anniversary with acclaimed LPs Nude With Boots, The Bride Screamed Murder and A Senile Animal. But this two-night stand at the Mohawk isn’t about recent triumphs. Instead, Buzz Osborne and company celebrate the past, jumping on the full-album-start-to-finish performance bandwagon by taking it to its furthest extreme. On Friday, the band blasts through not one, not two, but three of its early classics: Lysol, Houdini and the Eggnog EP. Saturday night the trend continues with romps through Bullhead and Stoner Witch. It’s a veritable orgy of slow churning proto-metal scree, sure to delight Melvins old-timers and educate the young’ns about where their heroes came from. With all the sludge overflowing the outdoor stage, there’s no need for opening acts - this weekend is pure Melvins goodness from nose to tail. Get your spread eagle beagle ready.
