Lege Roundup: Sexism, TSA & Sanctuary Cities [Politics]
- Yesterday Rep. Senfronia Thompson took to the House floor to speak out against some fliers that had been handed out by the Texas Civil Justice League. The offensive flyer in question featured an infant suckling at a bare breast next to the headline, "Don't expand the nanny state." A bipartisan group of female legislators stood behind Rep. Thompson as she stated,
"They have no right to do women this way. We have not earned this disrespect in this house. We fight here, we get elected just like you do. And men, if you don't stand up for us today, don't you walk in this chamber tomorrow."
The leader of the tort reform group has since apologized, saying that that flyer was a draft not meant to be seen by the public. - In other Lege-related news, HB 1937 -- better known as the bill to stop TSA groping -- is pretty much dead after federal agents visited the bill's sponsor, tea party favorite Sen. Dan Patrick, and warned him that such legislation would close all the airports in Texas. US Attorney John E. Murphy sent a letter to Straus and Dewhurst saying that if the bill became a law, "TSA would likely be required to cancel any flight or series of flights for which it could not ensure the safety of passengers and crew."
- Another bill that is dead in the water: HB 12, aka the sanctuary cities bill. This week's vote in the Senate to bring it to the floor failed 19-12, and Democrats say it's finished.
