Weekly Music Picks - Wild Combinations
So many shows, so much time. This is a big week for our music writer friends at the Austin Chronicle. On Wednesday Audra Schroeder will be reading a music-related piece at Five Things (more on this event later) and on Thursday the magazine is launching their Paper Cuts Live Music Series with a performance from Foot Patrol at the Palm Door.
Monday:
Storming into the staid world of singer-songwritership, Tristen's debut Charlatans at the Garden Gate is a refreshing new-blood take on an old thing. She's playing Bonnaroo later this month so take it from us - jump on the opportunity to see her now before the only chance you get to do so is while standing behind a guy wearing an oversized foam cowboy hat at a large summer music festival. Also - Wolvserpent are coming to Headhunters. The "blackened experimental doom" duo have a new album out called Blood Seed, which you can stream here.
Tuesday:
White Lies and Asobi Seksu drop into Antone's for an early week performance. The latter have a new EP called Perfectly Crystal out on Polynvinyl. John Vanderslice plays the Mohawk, and metal stalwarts Acrassicauda perform at Red 7. Learn more about this Iraqi heavy metal band here.
Wednesday:
Here We Go Magic are back in Austin, playing the Parish with Cavemen and Shells. Here We Go Magic lead singer Luke Temple recently announced the forthcoming release of a new solo album entitled Don't Act Like You Don't Care. The album comes out on August 16th on our local Western Vinyl label.
Thursday:
Beerland books a strong show with the Maine Coons, Lost Controls, Dead People and Bloody Knives.
Friday:
Gruff Rhys, solo artist and Super Furry Animal is playing inside at the Mohawk, and the Melvins are performing the first of their two-night residency outside. Psych-rock band Rubble have a show at Trailer Space.
Saturday and Sunday:
OBN III's, Dikes of Holland and Planets all play Ruta Maya. Melvins continue sludging out the Mohawk, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. plays Emo's inside while Devin the Dude raps outside. Darling New Neighbors play their last show ever at Skinny's Ballroom, and the Pink Floyd extravaganza "Which One's Pink?" takes place at Seaholm. On the website for "Which One's Pink," they've noted that "[w]e have just confirmed with city officials that this will be the last show ever at Seaholm Power Plant before a long multi-year redevelopment plan begins."
So that's Saturday. And on Sunday, A Flock of Seagulls plays Red7 with MVSCLS, Missions, and Red Falcon.
