LightBox to Develop Sony’s Starhawk

LightBoxStarhawk the “spiritual successor” (read: space sequel) to the 2007 action game Warhawk has been confirmed in development for a release in the first quarter of 2012. Headed by the Austin developers LightBox in coordination with Sony’s Santa Monica team, it is an exclusive PlayStation 3 release, and marks the first good news for Sony since March.

Starhawk will feature a single player campaign, which many fans were surprised to find missing from the first (what could be so bad about a world that looks like it was designed by Ricardo Bofill that everyone’s at war?). Not only will the player be able to work through the story as Emmett Graves, the glowing badass miner, but they have added a new building battle feature which will allow the player to build on-the-fly structures in order to develop new strategies on the more open landscapes (and occasionally very satisfyingly crush enemies with them).

The news comes as Sony’s PlayStation Network begins opening it’s doors (not too wide, now) again to the public. LightBox was established in 2009 as a transplant from Salt Lake City, of all places. Once in Austin, they quickly built a team of near fifty using the draw of the city to pick out their talent, and here they are, two (but probably one) years later undertaking one of the biggest games developed in Austin in the past few years, and one that is genuinely exciting. Just take a look at the teaser.
