Sony Calls on Debix Inc., for Much-Needed Backup

Sony has called in Debix Inc., an Austin security firm, for some much-needed damage control this past weekend. After April’s major breach, Debix will be offering 12 months of free monitoring, priority access to the firm’s private investigators, and a $1 million insurance policy for the millions of Americans whose personal and credit card information are in question.

Sony has been facing a lot of heat after it took them seven days to announce their initial security leak, the reason for the shutting down of their PlayStation Network. The trouble seems to have started after Sony threatened PlayStation 3 community hacker Geohotz with legal action after he posted detailed instructions and his own developed software for jailbreaking a PS3 (they have since buried that hatchet). Based on prior cases, the legailty of jailbreaking electronic devices is random at best(thanks to Congress and the DMCA). Yet, it was this threat that lit a fire among the hacking community(one you really don’t want to piss off) causing the first breach in the Official Playstation Network on April 19.

Either way, Sony says PSN and Qrocity will be restored to full working condition by May 31st, with some features coming online before then. The deadline to enroll in Debix Inc., protection program is June 18th, so sign up here before then.
